Michael Harry Frank Hammond CBE DL

Born in Walton on the Hill in 1933 to Cecil and Kate (Lovell) Hammond. Married Jenny Campbell in 1965. Three children Sara, Ralph and Richard and six grandchildren. Died peacefully at home after a short illness on 21 September 2017, aged 84.

Solicitor
Town Clerk and Chief Executive of Nottingham City Council 1974 - 1990
Commander of the British Empire
Deputy Lieutenant, Nottinghamshire

Other appointments - Election supervisor Rhodesia/Zimbabwe Indiana Election,1980 ; Chairman of the Association of Local Authority Chief Executives; Stroke Medical Appeal, East Midlands; Member of the regional committee of the North British Housing Association; Trustee Nottingham Almshouse Charity; Hillsborough Disaster Appeal Fund; President of the Nottinghamshire branch of the British Red Cross; Governor of Nottingham High School;
Member of the National Forest Advisory Board; Member of the Nottinghamshire Law Society (President 1989-1990); Nottingham Proprietary Bowling Green Club; Queen Anne’s Bowling Green Club; Nottingham and Notts United Services Club.

But most of all he was 'our Dad'. He was always interested in everything we did and “we” was very much his children, our spouses and his grandchildren. He was a very inclusive and equitable man. He challenged us; he supported us; he made us laugh. He threw himself into everything and was a great one for celebrating everything. His friends, work and involvement with the organisations detailed above were very important to him. He touched many lives and what he did in his life made a real difference to so many.

He will be sorely missed……… but the quick dash across the lawn, the slow bicycle race, games of Finance and discussions on where the A52 starts and the Derby Road end may be easier to conduct now!

Jane, John, Frances & David Shackleton donated £100 in memory of Michael

MucI love and happy memories. I will always remember your kindness when I was in Nottingham.

Ryan Steed, NJLD Chair on behalf of the Nottinghamshire JLD donated £50 in memory of Michael

We make this donation on behalf of the Nottinghamshire Junior Lawyers Division. Mr Hammond founded the NJLD and NLS Annual Hammond Cup competition which has taken place annually and has just seen its 49th year. During this time our membership has greatly benefited from the competition, it allowed competitors to develop their advocacy skills and set them up for a career in the law. The problems are written by members of the profession and present scenarios, drafted to challenge participants on their ability to apply the relevant law, to persuade a court and to think on their feet. Participants take part in an initial knock-out round whereby only four will progress to the competition final. By getting professional solicitors, barristers, magistrates and Judges involved in the judging of the competition, participants are able to experience hearings as if they were advocating in Court on a real-life matter. The competition is prestigious and well-renowned across Nottinghamshire and we thank Mr Hammond for presenting our members with such a fantastic opportunity. We, alongside NLS, will be sure to continue his legacy through to the competitions 50th year and beyond.
