I first met Duncan when I was a student; he and Phil Rothwell interviewed me for a student placement with the RPSB - a long time ago! When I subsequently arrived at the RSPB, I played hockey with Duncan for the RSPB mixed team, went on (pedal!) bike rides, probably spent too much time in the pub and generally learnt loads from him about water conservation 'stuff'. We both moved to the EA about the same time too, where I saw him much less frequently - however, in my last few months at the EA before moving jobs I saw him more regularly as I was then working in FCRM. It was great to catch up, hear about the small holding and how much he was enjoying living in Norfolk. I was so sad to hear the news Duncan had passed away.

I have good memories of working with Duncan on the board of the Marine Conservation Society for some 8 years or so. Kind, funny, thoughtful and challenging, we and the environment are much the poorer for his loss. One of the 'good guys' - his legacy will continue. Thinking of Mandy and all his family.

Really going to miss you Duncan, you went too soon. Its been a real pleasure and honour to have worked with Dunc and been his friend. As others have already said Duncan was a passionate conservationist and had a talent for legislation. We worked together on the floods bill and I know exactly the parts that reflect Duncan's passion for the environment, a true legacy. I've uploaded a couple of photos of the rare occasions where we did some, get your hands dirty conservation work when we volunteered together including planting reeds at RSPB's freiston reserve followed by a friendly cricket match EA vrs RSPB (can't remember who won). Part of that reedbed is there from Duncan's fair hands. One of my biggest regrets is not seeing Duncan and Mandy at the civil war re-enactments, something he talked about often, but I did get to see Duncan's cannon in action.

Remember you as a lovely bloke and reading other people's messages it seems that people who knew you in different ways thought the same. Very sad.

We were deeply saddened by the news of death of one of the "good guys". We have lots of happy memories of Duncan and Mandy sharing many Indian meals, Beers and parties all filled with laughter and silliness especially when playing board games.
We will miss him and we send our love to Mandy, his family and other friends
