In loving memory of Harry Birchall who sadly passed away on 19th August 2017

Not, how did he die, but how did he live?
Not, what did he gain, but what did he give?
These are the units to measure the worth
Of a man, regardless of birth.
Not what was his church, nor what was his creed?
But had he befriended those really in need?
Was he ever ready, with word of good cheer,
To bring back a smile, to banish a tear?
Not what did the sketch in the newspaper say,
But how many were sorry when he passed away?

I followed in my brothers footsteps, at 7 years old I followed our Harry by joining the 93 Toc H cubs and continued into the scouts until 16 years old and girls started to look different than boys.

At 15 years old I started work as an apprentice electrician just like our Harry. At 19 years old I joined Troupe Curtis Electrical Marine Engineers based on Broadway just like our Harry and worked on Manchester Docks.

I very, very nearly went to sea just like our Harry, but I had seen too many ex merchant seamen in and around Salford who found it very difficult to settle down and make a life for themselves, and decide to take a different path.

Later on in life we traced our family tree and co wrote a small booklet about family life around the years 1950 to 1957, very happy memories Harry, I will always treasure them.

Love
David

An tribute from a grandson.
Having been retired throughout my lifetime, my Grandad has always been active and mentally active. Whilst it was with a heavy heart I saw him on his last day, the memories I have of him have been formed over many years.
An active body led to many fun experiences walking and rambling in the lake district (grandma will tell you about my meltdown at climbing one peak!)
An astute mind to continue learning after the rigors of work were over. Catering college and learning more about computers than I will ever know - to name but 2.
I will always have you to thank for my escapades abroad in my formative years, something that helped make me who I am today.
I will always have a tear when I think of you - but only because you not here and it will always be accompanied by a joyful smile at how much you have made me laugh.
I hope I can make you proud.
From 1 loving grandson.
Luke x
