I heard this very sad news that Richard had passed away yesterday and I felt compelled to write this message in order that I could share the impact that Richard has had on my life.
I met Richard when I was training to be a teacher at Bishop Grosseteste in 2002 and he was my mentor throughout my degree; visiting me at schools, guiding me and building my confidence. Although I lost touch with Richard I will never forget what he did for me. When I didn't feel I could achieve something he changed that and he was always there to champion me and share his immense knowledge.
Richard was someone I had always aspired to be like and I am thrilled to say that I have followed in his footsteps. I am currently assistant head at a school that he once was head. I really don't think that I would be the person I am today without the dedication and kindness that Richard showed me. I am so sorry for the family's loss but I hope that they will find comfort in the fact that skills taught by him live on and continue to be used to ensure that children, who live in challenging circumstances, are offered every opportunity through education. I will always hold Richard in my heart and endeavour to pass on to others what he passed to me.
