We miss you John, such a kind, gentle and funny man whom i first knew as a neighbour growing up, never to imagine you would one day be married to my mum! You two shared some amazing adventures together and made some great memories. My girls will also miss "Grandad John" and his interesting facts and funny stories. A great loss to us all. Much love to all his family. May you now rest in peace John. xx Robert, Tracie, Millie and Evie xx

Marie Mills donated £20 in memory of John

When visiting a pen friend in 1974, at the age of 16. I was alone and stuck in Newhaven due to a French seaman strike. Mum and dad were in London. With no mobile phones in those days I felt very lost and frightened . Using a payphone I called my grandma knight, who could only think of one person who would know what to do. John Shaw. His advice and reassurance was just what I needed. I was put up overnight at a bed and breakfast and sailed to Dieppe the following evening. I've Never forgotten how John helped me.

We miss you, grandad, so much already, but you're up there now with grandma and Pete probably having a good old catch up. Rest in peace. We love you.
