Lawrie Short Thanksgiving Service - Monday 12th June 2017

We will be remembering Lawrie in a Thanksgiving service at Grove Hill Evangelical Church, 123 Grove Hill, South Woodford E18 2HY on Monday 12th June 2017 at 2pm. The service will last approx one hour and will be followed by afternoon tea.

Prior to the Thanksgiving service there will be a short service of committal for family and close friends at 12.15pm at the North Chapel, City of London Cemetery, Aldersbrook Road, Manor Park E12 5DQ.

No flowers please, but if you wish donations can be made in his memory to the Alzheimers Society or the Bluebell Railway Trust.

Dress:
In line with Lawrie’s carefully honed sartorial style do dress for comfort. Corduroy optional!

RSVP:
For catering & practical purposes it would be hugely helpful if you could let us know as soon as possible if you are planning to attend.
Update: 10th June 2017
If you have responded to let us know that you intend to come to either of the services and the afternoon tea on Monday, this has been very helpful in estimating numbers to cater for.
If you have not responded, do not let this put you off coming. You will still be very welcome.

How to get there:
You can find Grove Hill Church at the top of Grove Hill, off Woodford High Road almost opposite the Odeon. It is about a 1 mile walk (mostly uphill!) from South Woodford underground station (Central line, West side). Taxis are available from the station. There is dedicated parking for about 20 cars next to the church and there is usually space in the road also. The footbridge over the North Circular allows easy access from Chelmsford Road and there is a footpath into Bressey Grove almost opposite the church.

The City of London Cemetery is approx a 5- 10 minute walk from Manor Park overground station.

Lawrie gave this speech on behalf of my father at our wedding. At Lawrie's funeral some of you told me you had heard about this occasion and I am so grateful to have this footage of him, so I thought I would share it with you.

I would have loved my young grandson Aidan to have learned about the world from the wisdom of Lawrie. I am so sorry at his passing and will treasure my memories of Lawrie. He understood humanity.

Although I only met Lawrie on a few occasions, I felt that he had become a firm friend and someone I had known and valued for much longer than the calendar indicated. He was such a generous, considerate and thoughtful man. I shall hope to emulate these qualities as my tribute to him.
Go Well: Val

  • When I heard the news about Lawrie I needed to go for a walk to clear my mind. On leaving the house I was greeted by this wonderful moon rising to the left of the Bernese Oberland giants (Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau). So, I share this photo with you - Moonrise for Lawrie. Cathy

Lawrie (well, always Mr Short really!) topped and tailed my time at ICHS as my first year and sixth form form tutor and was hugely influential on my formative years. A genuinely inspirational teacher and a very decent and wonderful man. I was lucky enough to be able to introduce my children to Lawrie earlier this year and they loved his company and were enthralled by his guided tour of the Ashmolean museum in Oxford. Two more young people who will remember Lawrie with real affection.
