In loving memory of Elsie Hewitt who sadly passed away on 19th January 2017, at the age of 94.
Elsie was a sister to Audrey Elizabeth, sister-in law to Harold, aunt to Jane, Jim, and Celia, and a great aunt to Mandy, Mark, Chris, David, Lucy and Jack. She was also Godmother to Alison.

Elsie was born in Sunderland, and yearned to be a teacher during her own school days. She did her teacher training on leaving school and then taught at Redby Junior School in Sunderland for 23 years. Her Head at that school said that Elsie had "outstanding teaching abilities" and "a deep understanding of the needs and apprehensions of each individual child", enabling her to "draw out the best in everyone from the cleverest to the most challenged". She loved working with children and helping them to learn to read. She was a very keen walker and enjoyed family holidays in the Lake District. After meeting Doug on holiday in the Lakes, they fell in love and married in 1966. This brought Elsie to Nottingham. She did some part-time teaching at Sydney Pearson Hill school and then Bentinck Primary, where she excelled in helping children to improve reading skills. She was very artistic and painted some wonderful water-colour pictures of her beloved Lake District. She also enjoyed needlecraft and her embroidery and tapestry skills were admired. Elsie was thankful to have loving and kindly neighbours and friends around her, as well as her family, and she will be missed.
