In loving memory of George Scanlan who sadly passed away peacefully on 6th January 2017.

George was much loved and is survived by his wife Enid, his children, Jane, Kay, David and Richard, and his 8 grandchildren, of whom he was very proud; Rebecca, Katie, William, Ellen, Sophie, Lucie, George and Libby.

There have been many kind tributes from people in the academic and football worlds. We thank the authors and for all those people, who knew George, who have shared their personal memories. The family has very much treasured these.

The family also thank the wonderful teams from Southport and Ormskirk Hospital, and the palliative care team from Queenscourt Hospice.

We would welcome donations in memory of George to go to Queenscourt Hospice. To donate, please Click here.

Dad would have enjoyed the conversation we are all now having about his full and remarkable life.

My condolences. George came to take part in a presentation about football and interpreting at the University of East Anglia in Norwich a few years ago. Such a lovely, sharp, funny, and fascinating man.

  • George Scanlon, A wonderful man. Had the pleasure spending time with George at Burnley Football club back in the early 1990s.We went to Russia for a pre season tour, where he was so instrumental in making sure that we were all safe and the tour was a success. A lovely humble human being. RIP George Roger

  • Unfortunately only just heard about George’s sad death, over 3 years on. I was one of his Russian students, and went on to teach Russian myself. He was a remarkable polymath and a true gentleman, forever gently ribbing me for being a Mancunian and a City fan, but an incredible teacher and a thoroughly decent guy. RIP George. Mike Dunn
