The funeral will take place at St John the Baptist and St Helen Church, Wroughton, Swindon SN4 9JS on Friday January 13th at 3pm followed by a burial in the Church Cemetery. Friends and family are welcome to join us for refreshments afterwards at the White Hart, Wroughton, SN4 9JX.
Will, known to all his friends as ‘Will Eagle’, was born in Neath in 1934.
Will did his National service and was posted to Hong Kong. On his return he worked on the building sites. He soon met his wife to be Valerie (nee Evans). They married in St Winnifred’s Church, Penrhiwceiber on 31st March 1956 aged 21 and 23 respectively. They had 2 children together, Davina and Pam. Will worked at Abercynon Colliery where he qualified as a Mining Deputy having responsibility for Health and Safety, Gas Levels, and working with explosives.
His many hobbies included darts, snooker, golf, walking and tending his 2 allotments. He excelled in Darts having represented Wales and becoming the British Legion British Champion in 1969. He would also spend hours in the allotments and loved a drink or two and the odd gamble on the horses!
He was a fantastic grandfather to his 5 grandchildren Sian, Hannah, Nicola, Fraser and Bethany.
When his wife, Val, started suffering with vascular dementia, he lovingly cared for her until it was no longer possible. When she moved into a nursing home he agreed to move to Swindon to be near his 2 daughters. He bought a flat within walking distance of the home and visited her every day. She passed away in 2009. She too is buried in Wroughton Cemetery which was his wish as he wanted to be able to visit her grave regularly and be buried with her.
About 6 years ago he too started suffering with dementia and when it became unsafe for him to live alone, he went into a care home. He passed away peacefully at Wemyss Lodge on Jan 4th 2017 with his 2 daughters at his side.
