Joanna: Bright, erudite and passionate about political studies. Moreover, a lovely human being and I feel privileged that our paths crossed. My heart goes out to Matthew and Naomi. xx

I was very sad to hear of Joanna's passing. When I began my PhD back in 1994, Joanna was just finishing hers at the LSE, and so was something of a role model to many of us. Her death is a great loss which will be keenly felt by many.

This terrible news reached me on Monday and I'm still finding it difficult to accept. Joanna was a warm, kind-hearted colleague who I was privileged to get to know through the IASGP. At a conference some years back she sympathised with my difficulties in finding a permanent job. Having not seen her for a few years, she picked up the conversation precisely where we left off. Joanna didn't forget people; and people won't forget Joanna.

Thanks to all who have left messages, your words are all warmly appreciated. To update anyone who is interested in making either a floral or charity donation in Joanna's memory:

Floral tributes are welcome and can either be brought on the day or sent to the Funeral Director (A W Lymn, Wollaton, as shown) by 9am on the day of the funeral service, 30th November.

We have nominated two charities which were particularly meaningful for Joanna:

1. SOS Childrens' Villages

Children orphaned and abandoned due to civil war, extreme poverty, natural disaster and pandemics are the world’s most vulnerable citizens. For over 65 years SOS Children’s Villages has been working around the globe to give these children a family, a community and a promise of a brighter future. Together with our supporters, we are helping the world’s most susceptible children and families to provide a higher quality of life, to prevent family breakdown and to ensure that every child’s right to a family, protection, education and healthcare are fulfilled.

Joanna & Matthew have sponsored children in Sri Lanka for a number of years:

https://www.soschildrensvillages.org.uk/

2. German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has a charitable wing, the DAAD Foundation [DAAD-Stiftung], which provides support for young academics worldwide and which also has an emergency fund:

Thanks again to all,

Matthew

This dreadful news reached me at the weekend. Joanna and I always enjoyed meeting at IASGP events - for serious chat about German politics, and for irreverent banter about academic life and colleagues. She was, without doubt, one of the friendliest folk at conferences, always reaching out to those who might feel nervous or have nobody to talk to. Her love for her family always shone through, and my thoughts are with those who were closest to her. RIP Joanna.

So sorry to hear of Joanna's death. I too study gender and German politics and I looked up to her research in that area. I enjoyed getting to know Joanna in Berlin at German election time. My condolences to the whole family.

The awful news of Joanna's death is hard to accept. The fact that such news came to me and others through multiple academic and personal networks is evidence of what a good friend, valued colleague, and all round good academic citizen Joanna was. In particular I shall miss her good humour at IASGP conferences and election trips to Berlin. My deepest condolences go to her family.
