Some special memories of Nannie Grace…
The perfect ‘film star’ curls that fell about her face.
A gentle soul, so quiet and unassuming
An open and generous heart, always forgiving…
Her husky voice, so softly spoken.
With a cup of tea and a biscuit, we were always awoken.
…The best roast potatoes,
Boiled and then deep fried.
That odd staggered garden,
In which she took so much pride.
I remember Sunday evening tea, with all the family,
At that little house on Raistrick Way, in Shipley.
All gathered round in the lounge
With that awful underfloor heating,
Burned the soles of your feet,
Until you jumped on the modular seating!
Her beautiful handwriting,
The many letters we wrote,
The Jumpers she knitted,
And dinner on a canal boat!
Walking the Bronte trail,
And a picnic at the waterfall.
Flickering images on Cine film,
A champion at scrabble!
She made me a sweater like a red brick wall,
Covered in graffiti hand stitched in wool…
And at Centre Parcs, during family stays…
Gave her a cycle – and she was away!
Liked her routines – didn’t like to stray,
‘Fish n Chips’ supper – always on a set day!
Wore a plastic rain bonnet, when it was wet,
Didn’t want to ruin her weekly wash and set!
Only shopped for what she needed,
To the list she strictly heeded!
Always dragged that blooming shopping trolley on the bus,
Refused to use any other type of baggage.
And I remember it really tickled the two of us….
When she once told me that her knickers smelled of cabbage!!!
Never forgot a Birthday
Always sent a card
Always had some pennies inside
Even when times were hard
Volunteered at her ‘local boutique’
And always found us recycled gifts that were ‘unique!’
But it was her garden, her plants, her flowers,
That were her real passion.
She rocked gardening gloves and that floppy sun hat,
Like they were the height of fashion!
She liked to use Royal Jelly
And watching programmes on the tele!
Parma Violets her sweet treat
Loved musicals and the theatre
And loved to read
From a generation that would mend and make do,
Never liked to buy anything new.
Very thrifty and liked to bake
Master at the Cup-of-tea cake!
An excellent homemaker – always busy.
Helped to sew lots of costumes
And once even dressed up as Queen Lizzy!
Grace Frances Beckett, so many memories we shared
You are in all of our hearts and will always be there
So in the words of another great icon
Who we sadly lost last week
“Nanu Nanu Nannie Grace” (which means Goodbye and also Hello in Orkan!)
And until again we meet…
…When heaven opened its doors to you,
A fortnight past…
We hope there was a reunion of Joy.
We hope you are safe and at peace at last,
And are now holding hands with Grandad Roy.
LOVE YOU NANNIE GRACE xxx
