I first knew Rick from the Hartley WIGS (Gilbert & Sullivan society) either doing front of house, pouring interval drinks, or sitting quietly backstage marking homework or swapping crossword answers. He was also of course, that rare beast, a reliable chorus tenor - beit Peer or Pirate, Yeoman or Villager. ( His dancing however, was a thing to behold.) A splendid fellow, friendly and enthusiastic, I shall miss him being around.

I shall remember Rick especially from the Gilbert & Sullivan society doing front of house, serving drinks, and of course as (that rare beast) a reliable chorus tenor, beit Pirate or Peer, Yeoman or Villager. His dancing, however, was a thing to behold. He was often seen quietly backstage marking homework or comparing crossword answers.
A splendid fellow always friendy and keen to assist, I shall miss him being around.

Rick and I first met even before he was teaching in Dartford or Gravesend! I was working part-time at Ashmead School, Northumberland Avenue, in Reading while completing my PhD - and there he was teaching Geography! We met again and became friends much later, through Judy and choir activities. What a great guy - I shall really miss coming round to help fix his bike! Many happy memories.

  • My name is Clive Saunders. I was a student of Mr (Rick) Burrows at Ashmead School in the mid-seventies. I was quietly googling all my old teachers just to see how everyone was looking these days and was deeply saddened discover the news that he had passed away. He was easily my favourite teacher and felt a real connection with him from the word go. Thanks to him, I developed a life long love of geography and travel and will forever be in his debt. The world has lost a very special man. I now live in Calgary, Alberta and have travelled extensively. Thank you and rest in peace, Sir.

My girls remember Rick as a funny supply teacher who they always looked forward to having. One of them said the students cheered when they heard they had Rick as he was kind and friendly. That's how we remember him too: kind, smiling, always ready with a friendly greeting and on his bike - never forget the bike! How will we play 'Spot Rick' now?! He will be much missed but we hope the many happy memories live on and bring solace to all his family. xx

  • Thanks Lisa. It's so great to hear comments like that on his teaching career. He loved teaching and he so loved pupils who wanted to learn and give back to the class. That was his philosophy; give something to the class, hopefully they will return with something better! Thank you for those kind words. Mark Burrows x
