In loving memory of Garry Bartlam who sadly passed away on 2nd September 2016.

I met Garry in 2011 when I moved to Exeter. We fell in love quickly and were engaged within a year. I loved his confidence, his individuality, and his total unashamedness of who he was. He had energy for life and was also sensitive, but strong.

Sadly over the years Garry encountered troubles which slowly wore away the man I had met. Whilst we spent almost 5 very happy years together, it wasn't without obstacles. But we stayed strong throughout. Until now.

Please remember the man and the legend, who had such an impact on everyone around him. Gee Maverick, Professor Xavier, Manager, Naturist, Car Salesman, Scuba Diver, Sky Diver, gadget geek, gamer, friend, brother-from-another-mother, father, son, and my gorgeous, loving fiance.

PRACTICAL NOTES:

There will be a short Wake after the service, taking place at the Thirsty Farmer in Whimple. It is about a 10 minute drive from the crematorium. There will be some light snacks provided, and a bar available to buy drinks. All are welcome to attend.

I only knew the Garry with the happy smile and the infectious enthusiasm and love of life. I didn't know anything about the troubles which slowly wore away at him until it was too late for me or anyone else to help him. To leave this world at 46 is far too young.

To try to put a positive spin on a desperately sad situation, Helen's choice of CALM is a wake-up call to all men that, at times, we need to drop the macho image and realise that we don't need to fight all life's battles alone. Let's learn from that and try to salvage at least something from Garry's untimely death.

Lesley and I offer Helen and Garry's family our heartfelt condolences at this very sad time.

  • Thank you Peter, for both your words and donation. No-one should have to face their problems alone, but some feel that they have to. Garry was always very open with me about how he was feeling, but on this occasion he lost sight of everything. I hope that the money raised can go some way to support both those who have considered suicide as a way out, and those left behind when their loved ones make the decision. I hope to see you both at some point in the coming months.

  • Some people you never forget, no matter how many years pass since you last saw them, Garry was one of these people, instantly likeable with his friendly manner and huge smile. He was also likeable because he had time for you, he made you feel special, he made you feel that you were the only person working under him, he made you want to strive for more, achieve and better yourself, I did this under Garry and when our working relationship ended I never forgot him or his wisdom, I strived and achieved thanks to him, I only wish I had contacted him later in life to thank him, i know I wouldn't be where I am today without him, Garry was a true one-off fantastic boss and all round great guy....Rest in peace my friend (and thank you)
