In loving memory of Mavis Kathleen Tonks who sadly passed away on 30th August 2016 at Bramble Lodge Nursing Home West Hallam aged 90 years. Mavis will be sadly missed by all the family and friends.
Mavis loved the colour blue so we think it would be a good way to remember her by wearing something blue at her funeral.
Mavis was a stay at home mum until Susan and Jane had left school, she then went to Bishop Lonsdale College where she completed a teacher training course, with PE being her main option. Once she qualified she worked at Roe Farm Primary School in Chaddesden, a suburb of Derby.
When the family still lived in Wylde Green Mavis was very active in the church but especially within the tennis club. She participated in the ladies singles, ladies doubles and mixed doubles tournaments annually....winning trophies many many times!
On moving to Derby the family joined Victoria Street Congregational Church and again Mavis participated in the activities here but especially she and Colin became involved and eventually became patrons of the Operatic Society....the highlight of this membership being the attendance at the musical shows and soirees that this group produced.
We must not forget her lifelong friends (the Fuller girls)....these she met as a girl of 5, and she still saw them until recently. Also her Wylde Green friends and their families..the Micklethwaites, Spendloves, Medinas, and many many more.
Of course the family were a big part of her life and feeding large groups of them at one sitting were not uncommon. The table would be fully extended and then out would come the card table and then a special low table for the youngest in the family to sit round. I know that many members of the family have talked over the past few days about these occasions.
Mavis did not say a lot about her young life but we know she had a close friendship with Barbara Burrows, who later became Harris. She and Barbara kept in touch until Barbara passed away, but Mavis still kept in touch with her sons Anthony and Andrew.
Mavis had an elder sister, Joan, who sadly died in the 1948, leaving behind a husband and a son. And yes of course she has kept in touch with Keith, her nephew, and his wife. Mavis also had a younger half sister, Ruth, married to Richard with three daughters.
Once she and Colin retired they were able to spend more time at their caravan in Wales and of course walking the hills both there and in Derbyshire.
Mavis organised family gatherings regularly encouraging all the family to meet up, including 2 daughters (Susan and Jane) four grandchildren (Paul, John, Christina and Steven), and eight great grandchildren (Orla, Tallulah, Huey, Alana, Dylan, Tederick, Hannah and Remi), not forgetting the Schenkein, Robinson and Tonks clans.
