In loving memory of Donald George Russell who sadly passed away on 29th June 2016.

Donald (Don) George Russell (17/03/1927 – 29/06/2016)
Happily married for 59 years to Kathleen (31/3/29 – 10/10/08)
Two children
Seven grandchildren
Six great-grandchildren
Two great-great-grandchildren
And that’s just the family. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.

Born in Salford, Don grew up in Whitefield (now part of Greater Manchester). He attended local schools before spending two years on national service in the Fleet Air Arm where he trained as an electrician but seem to spend most of his time refereeing inter-service football matches. On completion of his national service he returned to the Manchester area where he met and married Kathleen, in 1949.

He spent all of his working life in local government. He trained as a health inspector working for local authorities in the Manchester area before moving to Leicestershire in 1959, working initially for Billesdon Rural District Council (now part of Harborough District) and then Leicestershire County Council. In the early 1970s he changed career and started working for the then newly formed Rent Officer Service rising to the position of Chief Rent Officer.
On retirement he volunteered as an advisor with the Citizens Advice Bureau and, together with Kathleen, helped to found and run the Scraptoft ‘Five O’ club and served on the village hall committee. He had a passion for classical music, poetry and natural history and was an avid reader of history and Shakespeare. He was known to enjoy the odd ‘wee dram’ whenever the opportunity arose.

Don died peacefully in his sleep after a short illness with family at his bedside.

Thanks to Jean and Frank for reminding us of another favourite piece of poetry:
William Shakespeare As You Like It
Act II, scene 7

Jaques:
All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms;
And then the whining school-boy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress’ eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon’s mouth. And then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lin’d,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slipper’d pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side,
His youthful hose, well sav’d, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion;
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.
