Ken – well, where do we begin!
Ken was born and bred in Codnor, a village that always remained close to him due to both family and friendship ties and fond memories of growing up with his parents Doris and Bill, Bill whom Ken sadly lost at the age of 8 due to a mining accident, and then thereafter his step father Cyril. This however led to an increased loving family home with Ken’s sisters Val and Jennifer and his brother’s John and Nev. Growing up in that household was always going to be fun and eventful!
Once Ken left school, despite family wishes, he followed his late father’s footsteps and he went to work at the local pit. This didn’t last long before he joined the army where he enjoyed a posting at Dortmund, Germany.
Ken loved his time in the army; however following a motorbike accident, he decided to leave the army and pursue another career.
Upon returning to civvy street, it wasn’t long before Ken was donning the uniform of Derbyshire police. At 6’3 his height and stature was perfect for pounding the streets of Ripley, armed only with a whistle and wooden staff. Not many criminals would cross him that’s for sure!
As Ken progressed in his career, he rose the ranks until he made Inspector and quite appropriately, Inspector of the motorway police. This was a job that he loved: fast cars and ‘legally’ being able to drive ‘slightly’ over the speed limit! Jag’s were his favourite weapon of choice and I’m sure that the fact they were the fastest had nothing to do with it!
During his career, Ken also became Chairman of the Derbyshire police Federation. This was a role he loved, being at the forefront, ensuring that he looked after the interests of his work colleagues.
In 1994 Ken retired from the police after receiving his long service medal following a distinguished and creditable service. He always remained proud of his career and what he had achieved.
In the middle of Ken’s career, he became a father, firstly to Joanne and then to David. He provided them with a loving home, whilst also upholding values that had been instilled in him during his upbringing. He loved his family holidays which were often spent at caravan sites with other family members, although on one occasion he did take the family on a holiday to the South of France. The hotel was located next to a topless beach – Ken pleaded his innocence; however he couldn’t explain the fact he had purchased a new set of binoculars and sun glasses!
Ken was a loving father who allowed his children to find their own way, but pulling them back into line should they step out of course.
Following his retirement Ken loved spending time with his wife Jacqui; they loved to travel, walk their dog Max, spend days out together and also pursue his many hobbies which included fishing, football and the latest gadgets…..oh, I nearly forgot his love of beer!
Ken also loved to spend time with all his family and friends. He doted on his children, Joanne and David ,his son-in law Adrian and his grandchildren Matthew, Joseph and Erin whom he enjoyed showing them the things he knew and the things life had taught him. But most notable, he loved showing them his new gadgets – he always had the latest thing! If you had an iphone 5, Ken would have the iphone 6!
Approximately 4 years ago Ken was diagnosed with Alzheimers. Despite this, he vowed to carry on and make the most of every day, dealing with whatever challenges he would face. Sadly as with Alzheimers, as time goes on the symptoms increased and despite tremendous support from his family and those around him, Ken moved into a local care home where he could receive the full care and attention he needed. The following 6 month many periods of laughter and tears were shared by all as Ken would reminisce about his childhood, his army days and his days in the police. He shared them with all who would listen. The care home now had their own personal protector as he would often pull the other residents into line.
Despite his illness, Ken knew he was loved and cared for by all. During the difficult times a little smile, a calming hand on his or a kiss to his forehead made him calm and reassured and the real Ken Stocks would look back at you with a cheeky smile and loving eyes. He will be sadly missed. R.I.P
Ken asked, rather than flowers, if anyone wishes to make a donation, he dentified 2 charities close to his heart. If you choose to leave a donation, no matter how small or large, if you would like to leave a message then please feel free to share any fond memories or funny stories that you can recall as the family would gladly appreciate this. Thank you x
