The picture of Sue 'Getting in on the action', taken at Shelley’s and Andrew’s wedding, gives an insight into many of Sue’s characteristics. She had not long recovered from a near death experience when she taught herself to walk with artificial limbs and started a new life in Melton Mowbray. She was brave and determined, and this picture shows she wasn’t going to miss out on the action. In the actual picture I gave to Sue, I had cropped out her wheelchair. “Looks a bit ‘Little Britain’ with your chair left in” I said to her and she let out a customary Sue Emery cackle in agreement!
Her great sense of humour helped her (and everyone) to overcome some of life’s challenging moments, such as learning to swim again in Melton swimming pool where she had to suffer the indignity of being lowered into the pool in a hoist with everyone looking on. She said “I feel like a witch being lowered into a pond!” and then let out a loud cackle to lighten the mood. She was very open about her disabilities and enjoyed engaging with people and educating them about Scleroderma. There is no doubt that Sue inspired many people with her positivity and courage.
Sue knew she had to rely on others but she was also very giving and it takes a very special person, in my mind, to adopt and foster children, which Sue did. She was very generous to charities, even sponsoring a child, and she was a wonderful friend to me when I was unwell.
I will miss our Friday night suppers with Barney putting the world to rights and so many other things that our friendship brought but I would not wish pain and suffering on anyone and so the time had come to say goodbye.
Rest in peace Sue.
