I was shocked to find out about Lucy's untimely death. I first met Lucy at London College of Dance and Drama where she was in the year above me. Later she taught me at the Nonsuch Summer school in Matlock and she was guest tutor for the Oxford Historical Dance Society. The last time was in 1999 and I remember the last dance she taught, was Picking of Sticks which was the last dance we danced in the 20th century.
She was an excellent teacher and a lovely dancer. A great loss not only to her family and friends but also to the world of Early Dance.

On behalf of all the children and staff at Greythorn I would like to say how much we will miss the talent and inspiration that Lucy brought during her visits to our school. Romans, Egyptians and Tudors all came to life with her wonderful communication skills and in depth subject knowledge. she managed children well, engaging them in their learning and responding to them with warmth and humour. Staff enjoyed her visits too; a familiar face, who felt like one of the team. At Greythorn we celebrate Golden Greats-children and adults who demonstrate the qualities we value in our school- kindness, respect, aspiration, resilience, confidence and creativity. Lucy embodied all these qualities, she was a true Golden Great!

Lucy was just wonderful. A strong woman, beautiful, talented, a gifted choreographer - and someone who did not suffer fools gladly, and I loved that about her. We "suffered" through some trying times together, and could laugh and cry together and then shake it off. I'll never forget a bit of "retail therapy" we indulged in while in Boston. Lucy and I shared a love of shoes, despite our difficult-to-fit feet. I took her to a gigantic American shoe warehouse for a bit of fun. Lucy stepped in the door, took one looked at the vast offerings, squealed aloud and did a little happy dance right there! She had the joy of a schoolgirl with the steel of a dragon lady in her spine. I'll never forget her, and I'll treasure what she gave me. Love to Steve and the boys.

I can't imagine how Lucy coped with the sight of those shorts. The team rehearsing for the York Early Music Festival.

The first time I met Lucy was at Morley College. I can still remember that first class doing the farandol and being totally entranced by the delights of early dance. It was such an honour to be invited to perform with Lucy and Steve in RDCL. To be on stage with such a charismatic and accomplished performer is something I will never forget. Lucy had the gift of presenting the past in a way that was always well researched but never 'dry as dust'! She was a fabulous choreographer and teacher as well as a wonderful dancer. I don't think I have ever laughed as much back stage or occasionally on stage, as with Lucy. She will be greatly missed.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Lucy's death, as my memories are of such a vivacious, lively lady, full of fun and stories. It's many years now since she and Steve came to Norwich to lead the weekend courses on historical dance, but I still remember what an inspiration they were, and how much I learned, at the same time as being thoroughly entertained by her and Steve. And it was lovely to watch them dance together, as there was a grace and chemistry which was truly memorable. Many condolences to Steve and their sons.

  • It was at a Norwich weekend at Wensum Lodge, back in 1985, that I first met Lucy and Steve. Lucy was VERY pregnant with Tom, but I was spellbound by the way she glided with the utmost elegance and poise as she demonstrated 'fleurets' across the dance. floor (while whipping us Baroque novices into shape!). You are right, Lucy was a real inspiration, and a wonderful dancer and choreographer - an all round class act! Irreplaceable.

Lucy, you were always so warm, friendly and a delight to work with. Heaven has gained a brilliant and inspiring teacher of gavottes, bourrees and sarabandes. All the angels will be going Baroque!

"Come faeries, take me out of this dull world,
For I would ride with you upon the wind
And dance with you upon the mountain like a flame."

With all our love, Tim and Norma
