In loving memory of Terence Charles Cowling (Terry) who sadly passed away on 14th May 2016.
Born on 2nd August 1925 at 11, Bowness Avenue, Stockhill, Nottingham to Cecil and Maggie Cowling. His childhood was spent in the Stockhill area where he attended the Ellis School for Boys. In his teens he followed in his fathers footsteps and began work at Players cigarette factory in Nottingham.
He joined the Royal Navy in November 1943 and there sailed the world serving on HMS Glendower, HMS Valkyrie, HMS Drake, HMS Lothian (during which he was awarded the ceremonial Freedom of the Seas after crossing the equator in September 1944), HMS Scotia and he also spoke of memories of the HMS St Kitts. He finally left the service in June 1947 and returned home to family eventually returning to work for Players.
Love blossomed during the following years culminating in his marriage to Sylvia in 1953 and the start of a lifetime of togetherness. Their first home was in Wilford Village which seemed to light a flame which lit their way back years later. From there they moved to a short distance to Clifton where their love of dogs blossomed with their little treasure Shanie Babbins. After a few years and following 6 months of real hard graft away from home at the new Players factory in Stirling Terry built a nest egg that enabled them to become home owners at the new Rise Park Estate in Nottingham. However, they had a dream which was to live in a quiet area surrounded by big gardens and so in the early 1970's Wilford Village drew them back and they took on the challenge of 8, Holly Avenue. Many years of toil and trials followed, but together they build their vision and eventually when all was finished they really lived their dream like 'The Good Life' which was on the TV at the time. Many will remember being charmed by the orchard with flock of chickens, the vegetable garden, the flower beds and spreading lawns, these are memories that will be treasured by all.
Sadly Sylvia passed away after a short illness in 2007, but despite his loss Terry quickly picked himself up and took on everything that they used to do together and more. Not only did he quickly take over emails and skype to keep in touch with friends and family around the world he also mastered facebook, mobile phones and many other aspects of the modern world. All this and keeping house and garden 'shipshape' while enjoying his love of cooking and eating.
For his resiliance, love, devotion, support, and above all his humour Terry will be a treasure in the lives of all who knew him.
