It is a rare pleasure, it seems, to find those who are prepared to initiate and take action. Derek was one of that happy breed. He retook control of the 11th Croydon Boys Brigade and re-energised the company.
In 2012, I was dithering about organising transport for members of the Croydon Battalion to an event. Derek had the faith to book a coach and hope the battalion would fill it. We did, and needed additional cars as well.
I also warmly recall being inspecting officer at the 11th's awards night. I was delighted to see a traditional BB Company with a twist. For example, the company section gave a very impressive non-verbal command drill display. Derek's guidance was evident in the enthusiasm and precision of the evening.
Derek exuded confidence and competence and coupled with a quiet authority and firm faith guided the 11th forward towards the object of the Boys' Brigade.
