To My Friend Sue
You were an vital part of my early adult years.
Giving me a safe harbour in which to work out my problems.
You offered support without judgement, guidance without pressure.
You celebrated my goals alongside me and when needed offered tissue to mop up the tears.
You gave me help when it was needed, but allowed me to take my own path.
We share so many special moments together, good and the sad.
As the years moved in to decades, our lives moved in different directions.
Contact became less frequent, then was lost for a time.
But, as if planned by a greater force, our paths recently crossed again.
Time had stood still.
The joy in my heart on see you again brought forth so many memories.
We made plans to meet, to catch up, to tell our solo stories.
Unfortunately those stories remain untold as your illness got in the way.
My one regret is that you didn’t hear my last goodbye,
But you knew I loved you and loved me in return
That’s all we asked of each other,
Its all you can ask of a friend.
