Sidney attended my grandads funeral (Peter James) in August 2015. We had a very small family only funeral. On arrival a man we had never seen before was stood outside in the exact same stance and a similar hat to my grandad! I think it was my uncle who said hello and introduced himself and Sidney said he'd worked with my grandad in the police and he was aware it was a family only funeral but he said "Peter was a lovely man, I just wanted to show my respects" he just wanted to wait outside.
It was funny, he was very much similar to my grandad, having the same gentile manner and rather old fashioned mannerisms. We of course invited him in to join our little funeral. It was really lovely to have him there to represent that era of policeman and my grandad would have really liked that.
I was so touched by him attending that I looked up his phone number and phoned him about a week later. I told him that I was glad he'd been there and he told me a lovely and rather funny story about when he joined the police and my grandad had been kind to him (not dobbed him in!) which had obviously stayed with him.
I'll always remember Sidney for attending that funeral and telling me that lovely story. What a kind thoughtful man he was.
