We are fortunate as we live out our lives to meet someone whom we recognise as being a special person. And we are privileged if we can call that person a good friend.
We met Eric and Margaret in the south of France as we joined other caravan friends and established a firm friendship. Eric and I, though from different backgrounds, discovered we had so much in common and shared our interests regularly as we Skyped each other
When we first met and during an evening’s relaxation with a G & T(s), Eric shared some of his experiences as a policeman in Doncaster. He recalled a lady who sold items from a cinema usherette’s tray as she stood on a street corner crying – “SHOE laces, BOOT laces, RA-zor blades”, a phrase which became synonymous with friends meeting at home or away to enjoy each other’s company. He told of a colleague at the station who would ask, “Er what you doin, is it a secret”? Another phrase we coined and used so many times, perhaps our favourite was “Er what you bought, is it a secret”? Not that we would ever do such a thing!
Eric’s passing has left a huge hole in our lives, his humour, his loyalty and his companionship - we loved him so.

Dear Margaret, Emma, Andy, Eve and Noah
We're so sad that Eric died. We spent some time at dinner time this evening talking about him and these are the messages the kids wanted to send...
Mo:
I remember trying on Eric's police suit and helmet when we came to visit when I was small. Emma taught me to say 'Eyup Eric' which Eric and I both loved. He was always funny and kind.
Sannah:
Just recently at half term, Eric was very kind to me. I was injured and confined to the sofa and Eric spent time talking to me and made me laugh for the first time in a month. I always looked forward to seeing him.
Naomi:
I had a lot of fun at half term with Eric. He kept making me laugh. I will miss him.
Jed:
I liked his magic tricks. He always made me laugh.
Becca:
I'm so very sad that Eric died. He was a very lovely man who always made us laugh and smile. He was very kind. I remember him at Eve's baptism. He made a lot of jokes that day, especially gentle fun about the 'baptism pool' and it makes me laugh even now. All the memories I have of him, are of him being funny and kind.
Dave & Raych:
Our first memory of Eric (before we had ANY children), was meeting him for a celebration meal with Andy & Emma, Margaret and Roy & Jean. I think we were staying in Harrogate. We laughed our way through the whole meal, and loved meeting someone who was quick witted enough to have come backs for Andy ;-) :-) Eric always had us in stitches. We were very touched by Eric and Margaret's interest and support for us when we lived in Uganda, and by the fun we had at Christmas and school holidays since then. We will miss him, but always with a smile :-)

I'm going to miss you so much my kind, funny, helpful old buddie. Who's going to make me laugh now? I don't think you realised just how much love and respect you had amongst everyone who knew you. You were one of life's very special treasures. So carry on with the jokes up there, and say hello to Neil for me, and behave yourselves!
