Becky was born at All Saints Hospital on 15th May 1982. After a few days she was transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital for the first of several operations. After seven weeks in the Special Care Baby Unit we were delighted to bring her home with us. Although we had to make many visits to the hospital Becky enjoyed getting to know her extended family.
Rosy, Becky's sister, was born on 19th July 1983. Together they grew up developing their own personalities and each reached their full potential.
Becky attended The Woodlands and then Parkwood Special Needs Nursery.
Just after Becky's 5th birthday, we all visited Sicily so that the girls could get to know their Italian family.
Becky started at St Bartholomew School where she benefitted from the excellent staff and wide range of dedicated educational activities.
Becky underwent two major operations on her legs to maintain her ability to stand.
Throughout her school years she enjoyed swimming, watching her sister skating, playing with her pet rabbit in the garden, trips out and family days.
At 16 Becky transferred to Grange Park College in Leybourne where she continued to benefit from a fun and stimulating environment.
So that Becky could continue to develop, enjoy her independence, and receive expert support she moved into residential care at The Little Oyster on the Isle of Sheppey. After 5 years she moved to Brightlands at Hoo, Rochester, which was more suited to meeting her needs. Whilst in residential care she was visited by members of her family, spent days at home, went out for meals and shopping trips, and attended parties and family events.
In 2011 and 2014 Becky suffered from major health difficulties and when these reoccurred in January after a short time in hospital, Becky passed away peacefully with her mum and dad by her side.

Things to remember!

I have fond childhood memories of Becky. She had all the best toys! Chloe Perren.
Such sad news. Becky’s strength and most loving character will never be forgotten. John Ward
Sending my love, she was such a character and will be dearly missed. Sarah Ward
Very sad news, a very special cousin and wonderful person. A big part of so many memories of childhood summers! Love to all the family, so sorry for your loss. Xxxx David Quinn.
Two trees are dedicated at Heartwood Forest, Sandridge, Hertfordshire. For a beautiful young woman who has left us too soon. Much love from Auntie Doris and Denise. Sleep well Becky xxx
Brightland’s staff and residents are going to plant two roses in memory of Becky at the home.
We received so many lovely sympathy cards we ran out of surfaces to put them on, so many lovely flowers we were running out of vases. Chocolates, Brownies and countless kind messages.

To Rosy
You were obviously lucky to have her as a sister, but she was lucky to have you too. Craig Bolton.
We thought she had such a bright sparkly personality it was only right she joined the other stars in the sky. All our love Tille and Tasha. (Two university friends have arranged for a star to be named after Becky).
Rest peacefully Becky and you will stay forever in our hearts. Claire Jones

Card from Becky's cousin Rachael
The front is a photo of a child dressed as a super hero. It says 'Super hero's come in all shapes and sizes'.

Dear Aunty Wendy and Uncle Ignatius – this is not a traditional sympathy card but somehow feels more appropriate for Becky. I have so much to thank her for, she is a big part of the reason I do what I do in the way I do it.

Becky is part of many childhood memories, she could say more with a smile that anyone I have ever met.
She will continue to inspire me to be kind and compassionate and to fight injustice for those unable to do so themselves.

Becky will be missed and remembered for many things, her love of balloons, and ability to eat sausages, her smiles, and laughter, and her ability to bring out the best in others. I am thinking of the two of you who also mean so much to me, and have been there through the good and bad times in my whole life. I don’t think there is anything I can say that makes this time easier but know that you are very much loved and that we are so sad with you!
Lots of love Rachel xxx
(and Paul, Sebastian and Alex)

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who attended the funeral yesterday and joined us afterwards. Those of you who travelled long distances, those who journeyed back over the years, those who were with us in spirit, those who joined us from near and far. It was wonderful to feel everyone’s love and support. You did Becky proud. Thank you. Love Wendy, Ignatius and Rosy.

As you all know, Becky could not talk but if she could this is what I feel absolutely sure she would say:

First and foremost, to my mummy I say a big, big, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, for all the times you spent at my side when I was in hospital and when I so, so needed you; and also for all the fun, fun, times we had together either as a family, or with relatives, or with friends.
To Rosy I want to say THANK YOU Rosy! You are the best sister I could possibly have wished for. I loved you very much and you always returned that love with no bounds.
To my aunts and uncles I say THANK YOU for understanding me and loving me regardless of my issues.
To my granddad I say THANKYOU for your generosity, and birthdays that you always remembered; for the love and support; and thank you for being here today.
To my cousins I say THANK YOU for allowing me to be me and to play my part in my own way. You ignored my issues and you let me in regardless.
To my friends I say THANK YOU for treating me as one of you and reciprocating all my love. I will love you always.
I want you all to know that I am now in a very happy, happy place. I have found that meadow that mummy told me about just before I left: A pleasant place full of colours glowing bright. Here I can forever enjoy the warmth of your love; forever be free of my wheel chair; forever be free of my leg splints; forever run free amongst the flowers.
Finally: if mum and dad go ahead with celebrating my birthday in May I shall be there too, in spirit, enjoying your company, your friendship, your love; and giggling profusely at the most trivial of things such as a drifting soap bubble or a few leaves rustling in the breeze. I shall positively enjoy the chance of a helium balloon, should there be one, bouncing gently off a ceiling, and I will absolutely love it if perchance one should escape outside just for the joy of seeing it rise and rise towards the heavens.

There are no words that can describe the pain that you must all be going through. Becky was such an inspiration to us all. A strong, determined character who put up with so many different operations in her younger life. She was so resilient but always supported and encouraged by the strength of her family. Wendy and Ignatius you have worked so hard to provide the very best environment for Becky to grow into adulthood and independence. I will always remember the game Becky would play with a helium balloon as you and I Wendy would sit and chat over a cup of tea!! We would give Becky the balloon - a split second later she had moved from the lounge and gone to the bottom of the stairs only to release it to the landing ceiling - she would laugh & laugh!! As soon as we went up the stairs to fetch it back for her, she would repeat the antics over & over again. A game she never grew tired of playing. Rest in peace Becky. Love Jayne and John XX

  • Thanks so much for this Jayne. What would we have done without you and all the Wards over the years??? I remember Becky breaking some of your best china at a BBQ! Her staying with you for the night and producing an interesting nappy for you to change! So many shopping trips followed by coffee and hot cross buns! Rosy staying with you for hours, days and even weeks, which she just remembers as fun times. Days out to the beach, parks, swimming trips and every attraction in a fifty mile radius. You coming to visit us the day Becky moved into residential care. So much support and fun over the years I could write a book. Whenever we've needed you, you've been there! Thanks Wards, love to you all.

PERFECT PIC-NIC (Dedicated to Becky Mauceri) by Ignatius 15.5.2004
Silky white fins silently sailing across the horizon
With the sun shining bright the picnic is still on.
Now water skiers appear!
One minute a little afar, the next minute quite near.
They’re skimming the surface! Hurray! They’re zooming around!
In figures of eight and plenty of spray, the surface they pound & pound.

Mothers with hampers, brollies, and lotion
Spending the morning all in slow motion.
Children excited: running ahead
Buckets and spades: yellow and red.

Drying cobbles, sea shells and sand
children joyfully playing in a new land.
Building castles and making discoveries
adding one more to a list of good memories.

Silver-haired gentleman walking with stick
Chooses this spot to pause for a tick.
With a grin and a smile, he rests on the gravel
As I continue my kite strings to unravel

Young couple quietly strolling along
Do I hear music or the words of a song?
Hand in hand, they walk so nice
speak very little but so much with their eyes!

Seagulls in the distance purposefully gliding,
Looking for left-overs, occasionally fighting.
They look quite large when they’re so close-by!
Now they take off. Moving white specks across the blue sky.

There’s many a small sound
in the melodious background,
and colour, and feeling,
and wonder, and meaning.
There is so much happiness and joy all around.

Feeling like lush carpet under my feet:
freshly cut grass all sensual and neat.
Searching for crumbs old and new:
Tiny black ants are exploring this venue.

White fluffy clouds floating silently above,
Going together as if in love
like strawberries capped with cream,
Like cake with icing—you know what I mean!

Oh, how the warm rays all the senses caress.
This is so lovely: Quite ecstatic - no less!
My wife and family, surroundings so scenic
That’s the recipe for a perfect picnic!
