In June 2015, Amanda was diagnosed with an inoperable aggressive brain tumour. Sadly, she died on the 11th of January, peacefully at home.
The tumour attacked her speech and mobility making it very difficult for Amanda to communicate. I’m sorry so many of you who wanted to see Amanda and give her your personal support were unable to do so.
Amanda’s positive, can-do attitude, coupled with a real warmth and an unmistakably infectious laugh inspired us all. I feel a real loss now she is no longer with us.
Amanda was incredibly proud of the the staff and the improvements to patient care that everyone was able to achieve. She frequently asked after her colleagues in the hospital and was luckily well enough to attend the ‘A time to shine Awards’ where she was very happy to witness the team winning the award for staff involvement.
Starting as a Nurse in Leeds at 18, Amanda became the Nurse Manager for Renal, subsequently a Matron in Renal, Specialty Medicine and Outpatients. Amanda led many projects across the trust and was passionate about up-skilling her staff and improving the care for patients.
Amanda was a firm believer in face to face talking rather than Email, and her pink theme brightened many an area over the years.
Amanda and I were able to have many wonderful experiences in the 15 years we were together, including re-introducing her to Thigh-burn on skiing holidays (I was a virgin to thigh burn before meeting Amanda), horse riding in the Brecon Beacons, walking in North Yorkshire as well as exploring the Isle of Skye. We were also able to take a long honeymoon and go half-way round the world, visiting South Africa, New Zealand and Bali, a deeply spiritual and welcoming island, which sustained a life-long fascination with Feng Shui.
