John was born eighty two years ago in Birmingham to his parents Sheila Doreen and John Jesper Shingler, and was a brother to the late Julian, and Vivian.
John had an enjoyable childhood with his two brothers in the family house on Arthur Road, Edgbaston. He knuckled down to his studies and passed all his exams. Following this he went to University to become a Chartered Surveyor.
He met Jean when they were both working for Birmingham City Council and got married on 4th September 1968 at St Lawrence’s Church in Northfield, and honeymooned in Ibiza. In 1973 they became
parents with the arrival of Julia, who was later followed by John-James.
John always had a passion for ball sports including squash, racketball, tennis, padel, table tennis, golf... the list goes on. Rumour has even won the over 70s squash nationals (although there wasn't much competition by all accounts!) John was a sociable person, he loved being around others, and over the years made some
good friends. He had the ability to mix with anyone and was never judgmental or pretentious.
So this is the John who loved a cigarette and a glass of good wine.
This is the John whose DIY skills were appalling.
This is the John who had a terrible fashion sense and possessed many awful
T shirts (including the Duck) and Hawaiian shirts.
This is the John who appeared on Question Time in a purple camouflage top.
This is the John who had a fantastic vocabulary and general knowledge.
This is the John who had a good sense of humour, and could often play the
buffoon.
And this is your beloved John, who peacefully passed away at home on 14th
March, and is still very much part of your world.
