Auntie was not just family but a dear companion and confidant. We shared countless long phone calls, discussing everything from world news to funny stories about what I was like as a baby. Her curiosity, wisdom, and love made those moments unforgettable. She will be deeply missed. - Paul
Daphne Lodge (9 Dec 1926 - 5 Mar 2025)
Funeral Director
Daphne Francis Lodge was born on December 9, 1926, in High Roding, where she attended High Roding School.
At the age of 14, she began working in service at Margaret Roding before moving on to work at Olives on Ongar Road in Great Dunmow.
In 1945–46, she met Ron Lodge after he had returned from the Army. He and some other boys would often cycle up to High Roding, which is where he met Daphne. Their relationship grew, and they were married on October 9, 1948, at High Roding Church, with a reception held at High Roding Village Hall.
Following her marriage, Daphne became a housewife. She gave birth to her son, Peter, in May 1951. However, due to a difficult birth, she was later informed that she would not be able to have any more children.
In 1953, she began working as a cleaner for Dr. Barber’s house in Great Dunmow. Over the years, she continued working as a cleaner for two households in Barnston and also assisted at the village shop.
In 1973, she moved out of Broxburn when Peter purchased the property, relocating to Watts Close in Barnston.
Between 1977, when Peter married Jackie, and 1999, when Jackie sadly passed away, Daphne was blessed with four grandchildren: Gavin, James, Adam, and Hannah. At this stage in her life, she returned to a caring role, helping to get the children ready for school in the mornings and looking after them when they returned home in the afternoons. This continued until they were old enough to care for themselves.
At 83 years old, Daphne was gifted an Apple iPad by the family, which she quickly adapted to using. She soon began watching her favorite TV shows and looking at pictures of her grandchildren. Before long, she had also mastered FaceTime, allowing her to stay connected with family.
In the last ten years, the family has grown further, with five great-grandchildren:
Hannah is expecting a baby in June.
Bella (10), Sophie (7), Millie (5), and Jack (4) live in the UK.
Issy (6 months) lives in Australia.
Daphne has remained in good health up until Christmas 2024
