We were so sad to hear Johnny had passed. He was a real character and we have lots of found memories of our time together at Countryside. A fellow gooner and a truly great guy. RIP

It was an extremely sad day when we heard the news that John, our neighbour for over 40 years had died suddenly and unexpectedly.
He was a lovely man, always happy stop for a laugh and a chat, and was legendary for wearing shorts in all weathers because, as he once said to me, "Trousers are for wimps!". This still makes me laugh to this day.

Ben, your dad was one in a million who will long be remembered by all who knew him, and we hope that the lovely tributes being made to him will be of some comfort to you in the hard days ahead.

RIP, John, we will miss you
With love Frances & Steve Wastell

Johnny was my friend and fellow gooner for over 23 years and as many have already said he was a true legend. I have so many great memories of our times together and he will be sadly missed by all those that had the pleasure of knowing him.
He was full of mischief, he always looked out for me and was generous to a fault. When he worked at Countryside he used to be my chaperone on work nights out, as well as my Johnny cab for that day picking me up in the morning then dutifully making sure I got home safe and sound. When he left Countryside he used to regularly come and meet myself and Vicki for lunch (or Victoria Louise as he always called her) and without fail he always arrived with a bunch of flowers for us each accompanied by a huge hug! Forever the gentleman.
Johnnys biggest achievement in life was most certainly Ben, I have never known a prouder Dad.
Rest in peace my Teddybear Belly, lots of love your Little Miss P xxx

John has been our neighbour for 39 years now. We've shared laughs many with him. He always had something funny to say. Ben was friends with our oldest son and even shared a holiday in Wales with us. Richard and Andrew also send their condolences to you Ben.
John could often be seen on a sunny afternoon in the courtyard at Anders Fall sharing a laugh with Bernie and my husband and looking like the three of them had been caught out being naughty. I used to tell them they reminded me of Norman,Foggy and Compo from Last of the Summer Wine.
Rest in Peace John. We'll miss your cheery face.

It’s hard to put into words what Johnny meant to myself, Nicky and our children.
Having known JD for over 25 years, he was there to watch our two children grow into adults and then meet our grandchildren. He attended milestone birthdays and family events.
He mentored me through some tough times. JD supported me when my father passed away and attended his funeral. I’m not sure that I can give Ben the same strength through these dark days.
He attempted to teach my son to play “the axe” (guitar). He attempted to teach us all Latin. He attempted and succeeded to get me to stop smoking.
There are so many stories. So many memories. He loved rock music. He loved movies. He loved eating. And most of all, he loved Ben.
We will all struggle to forget the legend that was JD.

Myself and Mags, number 8 as he called her were so sad to hear JD has passed. I used to enjoy our catchups at the pub where over a shandy we would talk history and of course football and his beloved gooners. I was always astounded at Johnny's memory for dates and names. Our favourite subject being WW2. Was also very impressed with his patience in building replicas of HMS Hood and The Bismark. Must have cost a fortune to buy in weekly parts but he did it. A special guy and extremely sad he's gone. Ben, your dad was a great man. Our heartfelt condolences.
