In loving memory

I’ve known Ken pretty much all of my cricketing life at Spofforth, I met him when I started playing at 13 years old, he was always supportive and friendly, encouraged me to go to Harrogate CC and my carrier developed from there. I joined the great 70s & 80s first team in 1977 at the tender age of 16. What a time that was, got to see the great Ken Lakin racing in from the top end, frightening batters to death, what a competitor he was. My fondest memory was him guiding me through to score my first 100 for the club at Little Ribston, I will never forget that day, he was so proud and we shared a century unbroken stand.

When he retired he was always there for me on the boundary while I was captain giving advice, sometimes taken, sometimes not, always there for a chat though and we discussed cricket and all the great times that I shared with Ken and that great team I had the pleasure of being a member of. A great friend over the years and I will certainly miss him. RIP Ken you’ve been an absolute legend X

Ken was a family friend who I knew my entire life. In my childhood we often shared family fun days out, holidays, and many weekends at a variety of cricket clubs around the Yorkshire region. Ken was a good friend of my dad’s and they were both teammates at Spofforth cricket club where they shared many successful years during the 1970s & 80s, winning the league cup more than once!

Ken was also my sister’s godparent, along with his late wife Christine. They were always both very supportive to my sister, and Ken often gave her great cricketing advice when she played for Spofforth CC & Yorkshire juniors.

When Ken became a pub landlord he was in his element! I think most people would agree Ken was a unique character and often very opinionated in his views. However, over recent years I have realised that deep down Ken was a sensitive soul, who was a genuinely kind and very caring individual.

Ken you will be hugely missed by your family and friends. Although you maybe gone you will not be forgotten. RIP Ken and thank you for all the great times/memories! Shelly L xx

Ken was my first boss and father of one of my dearest friends. Although occasionally grumpy he loved to 'hold court' and have a laugh. A brilliant character i had the pleasure of knowing.

Ken played cricket with my father, John Fawcett, for decades at Spofforth. Ken used to push me round in a pram and get me into the game of cricket from a young age. I used to love speaking to ken through his car window in the last ten years and he'd always give you a story whether you asked for it or not. I've only ever known life and cricket with ken in it in some form and now is going to be strange without him but I will always take his advice and spirit with him every time I step on that field

For the time I knew Ken, I found him to be a loving caring person. We spent many happy hours together going caravaning to lots of places, up and down the country. Needless to say I am going to miss him, lots and lots. RIP. Love you.
