In loving memory of John Helliwell who slipped away after a short battle with cancer on 31st December 2024.

Instead of flowers, wife Alison and children Olivia and James have asked for donations to Prostate Cancer UK or to Kirkwood Hospice where he was due to be cared for.

Please join family and friends for the celebration of John's life at 12.30pm on Monday 3rd February at Huddersfield Crematorium HD2 2JF, and afterwards at The Golden Cock, Farnley Tyas HD4 6AU. Come in what you're comfortable in (although John was always partial to a Goth-cum-steam punk look).

If you plan to be there, please email hellifam@outlook.com - ideally by 20th January.

As the family want to make this a great celebratory send-off for John, they'd be delighted if you'd also email any memories, anecdotes, favourite photos or a song choice that reminds you of him.

John was the essential bon-viveur and Byronesque dandy when he was at Bretton - at least that is the impression he gave - but he was also a compassionate and trusted friend. I remember him helping me when I was having a difficult time at Bretton - I never forgot that. He was also a stalwart of Bretton Hall Film Society, at the same time that I was secretary. He long remembered my suggestion of booking a very cheap (in every sense of the word) 1950s SF/Horror picture 'The Mole People' which was I think among the 50 Worst Movies of All Time. John was on the schedule as projectionist on one of its show nights and had to sit through it. I'm not sure that he ever really forgave me - and would often refer to it in messages he sent. Rest well dear friend - you will always be alive in my memories of Bretton

It's over 40 years since I last saw John, but his quirky, anarchic sense of humour and personality, and his unique style, bring me so many happy memories of our shared days at Bretton Hall. Thank you for the laughter and may he rest in peace.

Too soon, old friend. Way too soon. But will treasure the memories of forty years of silliness and laughter.
