Our Mammy Bridget passed away peacefully in her sleep & with her loving family by her side on the 30th of November after a short illness, although she suffered from Alzheimer's in the later years of her life she was looked after & loved at Springfield Care Home in Bulwell Nottingham, Our heartfelt thanks to Lucy & her staff over the last 11 years, your care for our Mammy was very much appreciated.

Bridge/Bridget/Breda/Biddy/Brigid/Mam/Mammy/Nana/Grandma was born in Cree, County Clare, Irish Republic in 1930 to Michael & Elizabeth Guthrie, she had older siblings Josie, Mary & Paddy, she was proud of her Irish nationality/heritage & her love of The Banner county would always be on show when the Gaelic football & Hurling were on the TV.

When she moved to England she met & married our father Mick Tobin & Bridget would have seven children.

She would have a lifelong love of horseracing and greyhound racing, which was initially passed to her by her father, Michael, who owned a greyhound. In her later years, this memory was a constant for our mother & even when she was to suffer from Alzheimer's she would recount stories of her & her father & the greyhounds.

During her working life, Bridget had various cleaning jobs with Ropewalk Hospital, YMCA, Woolworths, and City Council bus depot amongst them.

In her later years, although she was separated from Mick, he would still cook for her 3 or 4 days a week as they lived across the road from each other & although "she got on his nerves" they remained friends & loved each other for over 55 years.

Bridget was a resident of The Meadows in Nottingham for most of her time in England & was well known to the other Meadows residents as she was somewhat of a character & will be sadly missed.

Bridget's Funeral will take place on January 10th

Precession leaving Bridget's (The younger of the two Bridges) 12.20, however, parking and leaving is very difficult on Cinderhill Road as such we are advising that people go directly to the church -

I’ve known mammy Bridget for over 34yrs , we’ve had lots of laughter, lots of tears and wonderful memories to keep forever. When I just to ask you how you were, you always answered ‘I’m getting there Annie’ and now you have got to your final resting place. I will never forget you and I don’t think that I will ever meet anyone like you again in my life. You always said ‘look after each other’ and I will always look after your Bridget. Love always your favourite daughter in law Annie

Oh mammy the pain of losing you is unbearable and I really think that I can’t carry on without you. For the 62 yrs of my life we were the ‘two Bridgies together’ I used to tell you that it was ‘me and you (the two Bridgies together) against the world and that we were winning (even if we weren’t) and now I must carry on without you which is so hard. I have to remember that I am ‘your Bridget’ who could do no wrong & do anything in your eyes …. the fighter …… the fixer ….. who made everything better (whether I did or not) - your namesake - your second in command - not the oldest as people seem to think despite me looking the youngest and not wanting to be thought of as the oldest …. I am third and the leader of those ‘mad kids’ I have to tell you now mammy that I have often looked at this gang of rascals… my ‘brothers and sisters in arms’ and thought ‘God help me with this tribe, how on earth am I going to drag this lot through life’ - you and them will ultimately be the judge of my success or failure. I did not realise then as that 6 yr old the super power that you gave us all by having your blood and madness flowing through our veins and the invisible, unbreakable rope that you tied yourself and all of your kids together with forever.
You breathed life into us and made us battle ready and designed for life …. not an easy life of money, possessions and privilege that you would have wished for us but a hard tough life. You gifted us with your resilience, kindness, compassion, lack of judgement & prejudice and ability to treat a king and a tramp the same. You gave us life, a love like no other and laughter …. forever laughter.
I’ll always remember those days (before Alzheimer’s got hold of you) when me and Chris would lie either side of you in bed (me always by the wall) with we would talk about nothing and laugh. I always told you ‘to keep a spot in the bed for me with you mammy’. We would always go together ‘for tea and a bun’ usually after your appointments, like the day we went to get your results and you Alzheimer’s was confirmed …. I cried my eyes out but we still had our ‘tea & a bun’ in the cafe afterwards - when your Christopher rang you that evening, you told him that you had a lovely day, ‘one of the best days of your life’.
In my life I know that I will never come across the like of you again, I do not say that as your daughter & your favourite but because every one who ever met you would say the same - I could never forget you, mam and will love you always & forever - I will carry on as ‘one Bridgie against the world’ now for both of us until we are reunited and ‘two Bridgies’ once more.

  • She loved you without trying, you meant everything to that woman & you cared for her so much, mammy's words will forever ring in my ears - "Where's Bridget, have you seen Bridget" x

  • She felt the same about you, the words ringing in my ears - ‘where’s Christopher, have you seen Christopher’ - mammy never had to look far or hard to find either of us as we never ventured far from her side - she always knew that we loved her above anything else in life

Nana, we had great times together with your quick witted stories. You were always had making me all laugh. I miss all the times we had together and will always remember you at grandads the good times we had and he famous Sunday dinners. I will always laugh when I decided to be a social worker and you said why do you want to do that? I am still asking the same question. 🫣 Grateful for the years we had after that continuing to make us smile and the Christmas’s and Birthdays and all the other times which will never be the same.

I feel sad, knowing you are no longer with us but also take comfort in knowing you will be with grandad and dad again. Love always
