Dad passed away on December 20, 2024. Dad had been battling cancer for a number of years, but over the past year it had spread throughout his body. He made the choice to stop treatment for the cancer and go on to palliative care earlier this year.  Over the last couple of weeks, Dad developed a bad infection and he passed quite quickly.  Dad was comfortable and pain free when he passed.  He was surrounded by family, and was in his own bed in his own home: Exactly the way he wanted to go.

His friends and neighbours, the carers, Macmillan, Rosemary Foundation, the staff at Queen Alexandra hospital and the paramedics were so good and so caring, it made Dad's final days much easier and he got a lot of enjoyment from working with them all and enjoyed their company.

RAF Instrument Fitter and eventually Chief Technician, working with the MOD and BOAC. Maths teacher. Electrical Contractor. Art gallery owner. Farmer. House restorer. Baltic Helmsman. Mountain Leadership Certified. Japan Society. Buriton Neighbourhood Care. Dad was a complex and multi-faceted man.  He was also very well travelled and loved spending time with Olive in the south of France and in Japan.

Dad spent his latter years caring for his mum and then, the love of his life, Olive. He always said ‘what ever you do, do it with love, whether it’s the washing up, or laundry, or caring for a loved one.

In fond memory of our dear friend Mick Ayling, who was always unstintingly generous with his time, his skills and his knowledge. We have many happy memories of the 'old days' in Rye, when we were near neighbours.

It was a real pleasure to know Mick. I learnt so much from him during our time together with Neighbourcare Buriton. He had such a compassionate heart towards those less fortunate.

Mick was kind enough to formally welcome us to the village. We had grown a solid and respectful friendship over the last few years. I learned he led a colourful and interesting life, was a keen listener, with twinkling eyes. I found him remarkably modern with a good touch of class. He is an inspiration for humble pursuit of my goals over the next years. I'll think of him often when I make my decisions.

So sorry that I can't attend Mick's funeral. He was a very special person, especially to Olive for whom he cared so well during her final years.
