In loving memory of Nigel
Nigel Paul Smith, a beloved husband, brother, son, and uncle, peacefully passed away on 1st November 2024 at the age of 56, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born on 3rd December 1967 in Portsmouth to Dianne and William at St Mary’s Hospital, Portsmouth, he became Lorraine’s younger brother, and a lifelong Pompey fan. The family moved frequently—from Fareham to Ferndown, then on to Barming near Maidstone in Kent, where Nigel attended school for one term, and later to Copthorne in Sussex, where he started school at the age of four at St Francis of Assisi Convent. The family eventually settled in Rainham, Kent, where Nigel completed his primary education at Bryony School.
Not particularly keen on school in his earlier years, Nigel soon found his footing, making friends easily—a gift he carried throughout his life. He then moved on to King’s School in Rochester, which became his favourite school. It was here that he formed lifelong friendships with his pals - Jem, Rich, and Stav.
Nigel was a keen sportsman. He played American football, swam for the Black Lion Swimming Club in Gillingham from the age of 12, and represented King’s as a member of their swimming, water polo, and rugby teams. As captain of the King’s School swimming team, he broke all the school’s swimming records. His love of sport was not limited to participation; he was also an avid fan of cricket and rugby and a frequent visitor to Twickenham and Lord’s.
His professional career steered him towards finance, where he remained for over 35 years. Nigel was a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and an Associate Member of the Association of Corporate Treasurers. He shared his expertise and experience in senior finance roles across both the private and not-for-profit sectors.
Nigel took his first steps in finance with Touche (now Deloitte), but after two years, he moved to Lloyd’s Register—a role that, over the course of 16 years, not only took him around the world and fast-tracked his career to the level of Financial Controller but, most importantly, enriched him with lifelong friendships, allowed him to hone his incredible humour and quick wit, and left him with cherished memories and stories that he frequently recalled.
Following his departure from Lloyd’s, Nigel undertook several contract roles, working for Thomson Scientific, Ebookers Group, and Southeastern Railway as a Financial Controller. In 2007, he joined Elexon and quickly seized the opportunity to progress to the position of Chief Financial Officer. Over time, he also took on the roles of Director of Professional Services and a directorial position at Electricity Market Reform Settlement Ltd, where he remained until his early retirement in 2021.
His management style was unique—a true manager of people in every sense of the word: empathetic, supportive, approachable, and respectful. He empowered and supported women in the workplace, inspiring a well-deserved sense of loyalty. Nigel also recognised his own worth and upheld his integrity, never compromising it and always standing up for his teams, even in the face of challenging circumstances.
Nigel was not only a highly regarded finance professional but also a dear friend to many of his colleagues. He had an exceptional talent for connecting with people on a genuine level and bringing laughter to any situation. Incredibly perceptive, he possessed an uncanny ability to perform spot-on impressions and deliver apt commentary with flawless comedic timing.
After acquiring his Non-Executive Director (NED) qualifications, Nigel joined the Board of Directors at Sport Resolutions in early 2019. In addition to being a valued member of the Management Board, he also chaired the company’s Audit and Risk Committee.
He met his future wife, Joanna, in 2008, and they married in Krakow in September 2018.
Nigel’s successful career allowed him to retire early in 2021. While continuing his Non-Executive Directorship work with Sport Resolutions, he embraced a more relaxed lifestyle, spending time with Jo and, since 2023, Teddy, their delightful cockapoo. Teddy quickly became Nigel’s great companion on walks, introducing him to a vast community of local dog lovers and beyond.
Nigel’s larger-than-life personality, which he shared with all of us, was not enough to overcome the challenges he faced in his final months. After being diagnosed with terminal cancer, he demonstrated remarkable positivity and courage, determined to maintain normality in his life. His loved ones rallied around him, offering unwavering support and being rewarded with his quick wit and captivating storytelling right to the end.
Nigel is survived by his wife, sister, parents, niece Amelia, and nephew Freddie. His legacy endures in the countless lives he touched, the values he upheld, and the love he shared. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
