In loving memory of John Bryan Stainthorpe who sadly passed away on 2nd November 2024.

Born on 26 January 1937 in Shildon, Co Durham only child of Freda & Maurice Stainthorpe.

Educated at Timothy Hackworth School, Shildon, then Nevilles Cross High School, Durham.

National Service between the ages of 18 - 20 as a Fighter Plotter at RAF Cardington, Bridgenorth, then Middle Wallop & Seaton Snook.

His career started as a Clerical Officer with British Rail, firstly in Shildon, then Darlington, York and ending his career in Doncaster, retiring aged 55 after a happy career finishing as a Regional Manager.

Hobbies included cycling back in the day, gardening and playing the piano & organ. Always ready to entertain a room.

John was a gregarious, gentle man, who lived life to the full, and will be lovingly missed by Barbara, his wife of 64 years, daughter Sarah, husband Paul, son Martin, wife Karen and his four wonderful granddaughters, Emily, Freya Molly & Olivia. He was dedicated to his family. A true friend, a Christian and a well regarded Mason for over 50 years and a very reliable source of humour. Charitable, caring and a lifelong Sunderland AFC supporter. A rare character, loved by all he met, however brief the encounter. He will remain in our hearts for ever.

Sometimes some one passes and they barely create a ripple . Fair to say John left a tidal wave. A character so big and warm he made an impression from the off. I had the pleasure of meeting him and Barbara when our (Sarah’s & mine) children were just babies and toddlers. We continued to cross paths as our babies became all grown up , always picking up conversations as if no time had passed between meetings .With his brilliant comic timing and wit he filled the room with laughter. He was one of those characters you meet on life’s journey who immediately creates a space for themselves in your memory . Sleep well John , sending all my love to all the family xxxx from Helen (aka the pocket rocket) and Garry .
