In loving memory of Ivan Arnold.

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of a beloved father, grandfather, brother and uncle, who left us on 29th October 2024 at the age of 81, following a short illness. Known for his dignity, kindness, and quiet strength, he was a man deeply admired and cherished by his two daughters, grandson, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Born in 1943, in Rochester, he remained living in Medway and led a full and rich life. His adventurous spirit took him to many places and experiences and he poured this same energy into building his own home and pursuing a passion for restoring classic British motorcycles. His meticulous work and love for these machines became a lifelong hobby, bringing him endless joy and connections with others who shared his enthusiasm.

He spent many of his working years with the Port of London Authority as a Stevedore in the many London docks and at Gravesend docks, where he was both respected and well-liked. His time on the docks was one of camaraderie and hard work, and he had many stories to tell of the days before the National Dock Labour Board disbanded in the 1980s. Later, he found a new path as a Hackney licensed taxi driver, joining his two younger brothers in this venture, and he found delight in the people and experiences he encountered along the way.

Above all his accomplishments, his greatest pride and joy was his family, and he shared an especially close bond with his grandson, who adored him as much as he was adored in return. His legacy of love, integrity, and hard work is one his family will carry forward with pride.

He will be dearly missed not only by his family but by the many friends and acquaintances who were touched by his warmth, wisdom and sense of humour. His family takes comfort in knowing that his memory lives on in the hearts of all who knew him.

This is how I will always remember Uncle Ivan, sharing a glass of wine or beer over a braai in the garden. He was one of a kind, was always there to help when you needed him and we loved him like family. He will forever be in our hearts.

  • He was part of the SA biking family. How many trips did he have to Knysna in the end? Must have been quite a lot!
