Words of Memorial by Bob Alexander:
Robert Alexander
(Boxhill Farm and Alexander Motors)
Robert died peacefully at home on the 6th October aged 91.
He had lived at Boxhill Farm for almost all of his long life, initially taking it over from his dad as a dairy farm with his brother Jim. From an early age, however, his real passion was cars, and he built his own kit car with friends in his early twenties.
At the same time, he travelled the UK and Europe to watch motor racing events, and he also supported his cousin Ian in his early motor racing career.
During the war, he was evacuated to Scotland to stay with family and he maintained close relationships with them throughout his life. He spent his national service as driver to the local commanding officer and missed out on the overseas missions of his regimental colleagues. He married Barbara, and they had three sons, Bob, Ian and Bruce.
In the 1970s, he converted his hobby to a job and set up Alexander Motors on the farm. Working there with four friends, they serviced, repaired and bought and sold secondhand cars until he retired. He almost regarded this job as a 24/7 hobby, but he did also make time for occasional tenpin bowling trips and long weekends of golf in Scotland.
Unfortunately, Barbara died at 66 and Robert changed his retirement plans. He then spent many years travelling Scotland, Europe, America, Canada and Australia with family, especially his cousin Ian. Robert was always known for his positive attitude and his willingness to do anything for family and friends - never mind the time of day or distance involved.
He travelled alone to Scotland in June this year but, on his return, his health deteriorated and, such was his wish, he died at home after a short illness.
He will be sorely missed by sons, grandchildren, extended family and friends.
