John Philip Wilsher quietly passed away at his home in Toton, Nottingham, surrounded by his family on Saturday, October 5, 2024. Born in London, England on April 20th, 1934, John lived a rich and fulfilling life, grounded in his love for family and his deep faith in God. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Maureen, after recently celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary and John’s 90th birthday.
In recent years, John faced the challenges of dementia, and “dodgy knees.” Yet, even amid these challenges, his gentle presence, loving words, and quiet pride remained. He loved sharing stories of being an evacuee during World War 2, where he was transported out to Newquay, Cornwall, and cared for by Aunty Flo and Uncle Clifford Bath until he went back home after the war to be reunited with his brother and his parents in Wood Green, London.
Growing up, John lived “over the back fence” from his lifelong love, Maureen, and they were married in 1962. He leaves behind a legacy of love through Maureen; children Christopher (Jacqui), Nicholas (Hazel), Sara (Christopher), Michael (Emma), Tania, and Ann-Marie; grandchildren Benjamin (Caity), Joshua (Jaclyn), Talmadge (Madeline), Caroline (Sean), Daniel, Ethan, Esther (Braeden), Samuel (Jessica), Joseph (Tenille), Nathanael (Samantha), Rachael, Nikki, Naomi (James), Lucy, Hyrum, Hannah, Jonathan (Alice), Jared and Adam; and 15 great-granddaughters; Isobel, Olivia, Ellie, Claire, Zoe, Rose, Lucy, Poppy, Holly, Layla, Annie, Kaylee, Ruth, Clara, and Freya.
John was predeceased by his parents, Philip and Evaline. His younger brother, Richard lives in Colchester with his wife, Sylvia and their family.
John served in Northern Ireland in the British Army Pay Corps as part of the National Service Program from 1952 to 1954. After that he returned to work for Lever Brothers, becoming the transport manager in the distribution department. Later in life he worked for the Royal Mail, where he made many more friends.
John and Maureen moved from London to Bradford, Yorkshire, then on to Hinckley, Leicestershire before settling in Nottingham where they raised their family. He loved his family and they were always his first priority. He was always gentle and loving with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and being surrounded by family always filled his soul with joy.
John loved helping people and teaching them about his love for his Saviour, Jesus Christ. This was evident in all of his service work within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he held an assortment of responsibilities, including the Bishop of the Nottingham 2nd Ward and Nottingham Stake Patriarch. He will be remembered for his love for family, his devotion to God, and his warm, gentle hugs and kisses. He will be missed a great deal by his loving family and all his friends at church and in the community.
A Memorial Service will be held for friends and family at 2pm on Monday, 11th November at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - Crabtree Rd, Hempshill Ln, Bulwell, Nottingham after a private interment at Chilwell Cemetery.
