John passed away peacefully at home on Oct 7th 2024, following a period of illness.

He was much loved by all his family. His wife, Carol, with whom he recently celebrated 50 years of marriage. Son Andrew, Daughter Sally and grandchildren Alfie, Max and Jack.

John spent all his working life in education, and also fulfilled many roles in various parish churches. He was a Lay Reader in the Bradford Diocese for many years.

He will be much missed by his family, former colleagues and friends.

As a family, we are very grateful for the wonderful care he received from Manorlands, and also the local District Nurses during the last few weeks of his life.

Following John's funeral, refreshments will be served in Silsden Town Hall for anyone who wishes to join the family afterwards.

Carol Metcalfe donated £1,000 in memory of John

With grateful thanks to Manor Lands for all their help and support during John's recent illness.

Dear Carol and family.
Greetings.
I am saddened that John has left us.
During my time as minister at St.James I greatly appreciated and valued John's input into the life of our church. It took many forms - the formal PCC meetings where he would listen carefully, reflectively, and extensively before calmly, humbly and politely sharing his wisdom - normally in the form of a question rather than a statement. It was great having him in those meetings which may not always feature John's attributes aforementioned! The above was also present in an unhurried audience with John at your home or the church or street where John was generous with his patience and time that imparted a value to any recipient.
I walked away from such encounters with John feeling better about myself, the world and my place in it.
Thank you John - go well - a privilege to know you - see you soon - we are not far behind.
Love David

I met John through my partner Julie who had been a colleague of his years ago.
We became friends and shared a mutual interest in Aviation. Johns enthusiasm for his pastimes Aviation and Trains was infectious. John learnt that I wasn't just a pro Musician, I took a real interest Military history and had done talks at the Royal Armouries back in the day. John had his father Stan's memoirs, wanted them preserved somehow and asked my advice. In doing so John let me read the handwritten accounts from his fathers WW2 experiences. A great privilege and honour for me to read the incredible story. They needed to be preserved and John sent me the magazine when they were eventually published and kept in a local museum.
Johns enthusiasm for learning and teaching was great, I enjoyed his company.
He had a very aimable disposition made you feel good rare qualities in a human being. RIP John (I know you'll be up there flying the long haul routes)(
All best Regards to Carol and family will try make the church on Friday.

John, as well as being a personal friend, was a much respected member of the Sherburn and Northwest FlightSim Groups. His easy and likeable manner endeared him to those willing to learn from his considerable knowledge on the subject. We shall all miss his company and remember him with affection.
