Mary Jean Gorrod (13 Aug 1937 - 21 Sep 2024)

In loving memory of Mary Jean Gorrod, nee Harrod who was born on August 13 1937 at Worlingham, Suffolk, along with her twin sister Elizabeth. The twins were joined by a younger Sister, Jennifer and were raised in a small cottage on Marsh Lane.

Mary went to the Sir John Leman School in Beccles where she excelled at tennis and did well academically.

Mary moved to Norwich and worked as a Laboratory Technician for Colman Foods. She married Ivor and their son Peter was born in 1965. A few years later they moved, still in Norfolk, to Bergh Apton. Although Mary stopped working at Colmans she was very involved in the local community and was a regular at Thurton WI, amateur dramatics and various community and church events.

Unfortunately her marriage didn’t last and she moved to Broome, near Bungay in 1980 and later married Graham in 1982. Mary then began a life of travel living in Nigeria, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and South Africa. Using these places as starting points they travelled to many destinations worldwide.

They returned home to the UK in the early 2000s and Mary was delighted when her two grandchildren Alice and Rachel were born and she became devoted to them.

Despite many years of international travel Mary remained interested in local sport, always following English Cricket and wanting to know the latest news from Norwich City FC.

Graham died in 2022 and Mary then moved to Cambridgeshire where she was able to spend more time with her family. Although very frail at the end she would always enjoy a trip out in the car enjoy a visit and from her family, when she would always demand to see and hear the latest news and photographs.

She died peacefully being cared for by the lovely people of Rheola Care Home in St Ives.
