In loving memory of Charles 'Chas' George Harry Nicholls who sadly passed away on 21st September 2024. A funeral service will be held at Woodlands Crematorium on Thursday 17th October at 14:00 followed by a reception to celebrate his life at the Crown Tavern from 15.15. All those wishing to pay their respects and celebrate Chas' life are welcome.
And what a life it was. Born in Bromley in December 1946, Chas went to sea aboard a trawler in his mid-teens, experiencing, not only the wilds of the North Sea, but with relatively far flung places such as Greenland, Iceland, and Norway stories from which time he would often recount.
His career then saw him briefly work as an electrician before settling in Reading, Berkshire, where he would undertake teacher training, specialising in working with adults with learning difficulties. This spawned a career spanning more than 40 years in adult social care and social services. Indeed, Chas was the founding manager of the former Scarborough Training Centre where he and his colleagues provided skills training and a social and work hub for many adults with learning difficulties, for over 35 years. Chas was among those who really fought to change lives for the better, both in his career and his personal life. He would help anybody and was always open to share advice.
In Reading, he met his future wife, Nette. They moved to Scarborough, North Yorkshire in 1976, and remained happily married for over 53 years, until his sad passing. They raised a daughter and a son, and, for us children, it was a happy childhood, full of memories, love, and care, that we cherish. This extended into adulthood for us, and we will take so many fond memories of our Dad going forward. He really was 'one of a kind', and he will be loved, remembered, and missed, always.
Please share your memories on this page too, and help us remember Chas Nicholls or, to us, 'Dad', and all the happy times his long and varied life inspired...
