Sonia Stangroom (21 Sep 1938 - 19 Sep 2024)
Funeral Director
Sonia was born in 1938, to Dolly and Fred, she had an older sister June and younger brother Alan, the siblings were always close and enjoyed spending time together. When she was just 18 years old, she married Colin and left with dad to live in Malta where they settled for two years. Tony was born in Malta and when they returned, they continued their family and Jakki, Tracy and Robin were born, all in different places in the UK as mum and dad could not stay in one place for too long!
Mum and dad had a good life together, travelling to as many countries as they could for their holidays, including many visits to stay with Tracy and her family in Australia. Mum never seemed to get used to living without dad although she still bravely flew to Australia on her own just a few years ago.
Mum loved all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed the family times spent together, whether it was building sandcastles on the beach or sitting amidst a pile of wrapping paper on Christmas Day, she loved to feel part of the family and watch all the activity going on.
She enjoyed her hobbies of gardening, reading, knitting and her expert sewing gave us many outfits through the years including our wedding dresses.
Sonia was sad to leave her bungalow in Christchurch but found comfort and safety during the last 18 months of her life living in Ashgrove Nursing Home where she was loved and cared for by their amazing team.
She enjoyed her family visiting her and died peacefully knowing that she was surrounded by love.
