In loving memory of John Noel Gardner Penn who sadly passed away on 1st December 2015

Clare Lewis wrote

Really sad that my Uncle John died. It was wonderful knowing him again after being a little in awe of him as a child. He was a kind strong man with plenty of opinions (!!)- very much a Penn, but he gave his time and a warm welcome which will be sadly missed. My thoughts go to Connie as her rock as passed away.

With love and fond memories

Clare

John was a stalwart member of the cruising club serving both as commodore and as treasurer for a long time right up to his passing. He will be sadly missed by all the present and many past club members.

We are so shocked at John's sudden passing. We remember him mainly through boating and the cruising club of which we have many happy memories, and we always blamed each other for any boating mishaps which were fairly frequent. Such happy days.

Connie, I think I only met John once at one of the PCI conventions, but I know he was such an important part of your life. I don't know who wrote the following but I share this poem that my father kept after the death of my mother, and I hope it will touch you in a special way.

Tho I have had to leave you.
Whom I love.
To go along the silent way;
Grieve not, nor speak of me
With tears: but laugh and talk
Of me, as if I were beside you.
For who knows but I shall
Be, oft times!
I’d come, I’d come could I but
Find the way,
And would not tears and grief
Be barriers? So, when you hear
A word I used to say, Or, Touch
A Thing I loved, let not your
Thoughts of me be sad, for
I am loving you just as I
Always have.

My deepest sympathies to hear the sad news.

I'll always have fond memories of John from your many trips back to Ireland. I'll always remember his sharp wit and great sense of humor. John was always very kind and loved a good laugh. He knew how to fill a glass of wine and I'm confident he is toasting a drink to us all from a better place.

My thoughts and prayers will be with John and you Connie at this time.

Donal

So shocked to hear of John's passing. Our memories of time spent with John and Connie mainly involve boating and the cruising club with so many funny incidents and blaming each other for boating mishaps. Never had a dull moment when with them. Our thoughts are very much with you Connie.

Thinking of John today, Connie I just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear the sad news.

John was a lovely man. It was clear that the two of you belonged together and made a great couple.

I'm sure he will live on in spirit watching over you and look after you for years to come. May he rest in peace.

I'm not going to write a long sorrowful epitaph John because I doubt you'd have expected me to. Thanks for all those happy (and sometimes not so happy) moments on the "cut". I promise never to exaggerate my stories about your escapades in my company, no honestly John I promise never to exaggerate them! May you rest in peace now and I hope that you've already managed to persuade St Peter to reunite you with your favourite Yorkshire "ratting cap" from which you were so tragically parted on the River Trent all those years ago!
