In loving memory of Alan Michael "Joe" Walker who sadly passed away on 15th August 2024.
Alan was born in Mansfield on 23rd March 1947, the second son of Alf and Winnie.
He went to Bull Farm and Pleasley Hill schools where his love of playing football began. This continued when he began his 36 years working in engineering at Boneham and Turners, playing for the work's team, in addition to Ladybrook Athletic until he was 43!
In 1970 Joe's friend Terry introduced him to his sister Adele and the rest as they say, is history. After waiting for her to complete her education, they married a week and a day after Adele completed her teacher training. He used to say that he knew what he was doing in insisting she go to college! They had a wonderful marriage, a comfortable life, enjoying memorable summer holidays in England and Europe, especially to Greece and Austria, plus the Canary Islands for Christmas and New year in the sunshine.
Joe loved talking and driving so following redundancy from Boneham and Turner's he became a taxi driver. He was in his element and the little old ladies he collected from their shopping expeditions loved him!
Joe and Adele lived in the house on Hall Street for 43 years until in 2019 Adele finally convinced Joe that they would be more comfortable in a bungalow. As soon as they stepped through the door of 2,Ascot Drive, they both knew it was the one! By the time they reached the conservatory on that first visit, Joe would have signed on the dotted line there and then!
They had almost four years there until Joe had to move into residential care,at first to Newgate Lodge care home and for the final ten months of his life at Lowmoor nursing home. The staff in both loved him and gave him the specialist care Adele couldn't.
From 1996, when he was diagnosed with Crohn's disease, Joe's health was not always good but he didn't complain. Despite prostate and lung cancer, pulmonary fibrosis, diabetes and dementia he was always cheerful and optimistic.
The most generous, loyal and loving husband Adele could have had, they were married for 49 years before Joe died peacefully, with his niece, Ruth, Adele, Terry at his side.
