In loving memory of Audrey Worboys who sadly passed away on 13th July 2024.
Audrey Margaret Worboys was born in Tilbury in 1927, daughter and only child of Violet and Peter Peterson.
Audrey started work at 14 years old as a secretary in London during WWII, and then worked in various jobs before working at the School of Stitchery in Great Bookham for several enjoyable years.
She married Raymond John Worboys in 1950 and had five children Jeff, Christopher, Ian, Gill and Tim. Christopher sadly passed away in 1956 at the age of 6 weeks.
Audrey ran Ray 's office in the early years and remained very involved throughout his career as an architect.
After her children had grown up, Audrey worked as an Aunty with British Caledonian Airways, where she escorted children as they flew to various countries around the world - a job for which she needed no training !
Audrey was extremely proud of her children, her 11 grandchildren and her 5 great grandchildren and she remained the true matriarch of the family until the day she passed.
Audrey lived life to the full and her love of travel never left her. She was never happier than when she was on a cruise ship. Her last cruise, accompanied by her daughter Gill, was in 2023 at the ripe young age of 95 !!
Audrey's spirit, smile, humour and intelligence will live on in all our hearts and she will be hugely missed.
Audrey's charities:
The first is Sarcoma UK charity which is a national charity that funds vital research, offers support for anyone affected by sarcoma cancer and campaigns for better treatments. It is the only cancer charity in the UK focusing on sarcoma only (bone and soft tissue). Audrey’s youngest granddaughter Dominique fought and conquered this aggressive bone cancer at the age of 10. Audrey was always extremely proud of the bravery shown by Dominique as she grew from a young girl to becoming a doctor, now living in Australia.
The second charity is CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young). In the UK alone, between 12 – 20 deaths occur every week in what are very healthy young people. The CRY charity is set up to prevent these young sudden cardiac deaths through awareness, screening and research. It also supports families affected by such a sudden and sad loss. Audrey’s grandson Robbie died of an avoidable heart issue in 2017 at the young age of 27 and Audrey missed him greatly.
