On Friday 5th July 2024, the world lost a truly bright light when Anthony 'Tony' Welsh passed away after a short battle with cancer. Tony leaves behind his grieving wife Najat, who he met and married during the last 18 months he spent in Morocco; a father, who he cared for with such fierce commitment over the last ten years, and two incredibly brave children, who along with Najat, were there holding his hand until Tony took his final breath.
Tony was born on the 2nd September 1967 to Janetta and Michael 'Tony' Welsh (which definitely didn't get confusing when Toni number 3 came along!) and grew up in Radcliffe on Trent, before the family moved to Whatton.
In 2004, Tony took up the immense challenge of raising his son and daughter alone following the sudden loss of his partner, their mother, Kate. Whilst no one could have prepared the family for such a tragic event, Tony picked up the baton and brought Toni and Henry up to be strong, independent, caring people (with a penchant for designer clothes!), who are proud to have been by their fathers side throughout his short and brutal illness. He worked all hours and multiple jobs, where he met some of his best friends, all whilst navigating one of life's greatest challenges.
Anyone that knew Tony knew he loved three things; football, designer clothes (despite some questionable taste...) and travelling, especially to Spain. After purchasing an apartment in the small town of Mojacar in southern Spain, both family and friends often enjoyed holidays there, as well as being sent picture after picture as Tony enjoyed the sunshine. Mojacar will hold very special memories for so many people, all because Tony was able to introduce them to his little corner of paradise.
In typical Tony fashion, he was making lists on the backs of envelopes until the end, and only once his last to-do list was complete did he find the peace to move on to the next stage, where he is no longer in pain and is definitely wandering around in a florescent tracksuit, greeting everyone with a smile.
We are holding the funeral service at Rushcliffe Oaks and we would like you to join us for a celebration drink at The Cranmer Arms in Aslockton after a private burial. Tony did not want people to wear black, instead we ask that those who want to wear their brightest, most garish tracksuit top in true Tony style!
