In loving memory of Maureen Alice Edwards who sadly passed away on 8th July 2024. Born Maureen Alice Smith to Ernest and Alice on December 28th 1943, at Attercliffe Terrace, The Meadows.
Maureen was one of four siblings along with Doug, Dennis, and Gordon.
As an infant and junior she attended Arkwright School. At the age of 11, Maureen then attended Trent Bridge School alongside her husband Doug.
Maureen lived in a terraced house with a courtyard garden and her brother Gordon and his wife lived next door. As a young girl she would plant seeds and flowers at the very bottom of the courtyard where there was a ‘little space’ for her. It was her pride and joy.
Maureen loved music and received a turntable as a gift, which she would listen to endlessly as a child. Her love of music continued throughout her life and would always be caught humming a tune.
Maureen faced many health challenges during her lifetime, starting with the unfortunate accident when she broke her spine. At around the age of 12 she spent 6 months in City hospital, where they fused her spine together and had to be placed in an iron cast for the majority of her stay. Maureen remained strong-willed throughout and returned to the family home soon after.
At the age of 14 Maureen met Doug, who was then 15 years old, and she would follow Doug around on her bike.
At the very young age of 13, 1957, Maureen started work. Then when she left school she started as a seamstress at R.J Masons, St Mary’s Gate, Lace market, using an overlock Singer sewing machine to make curtains. She continued to love sewing as she grew older, even buying her own industrial machine to make curtains, bedsheets and anything else she could for family and friends.
Doug and Maureen married on March 23rd 1963 and they had a wonderful wedding night in Lincoln. Two days later 'Dougie' was stationed back to Malaysia for a further six months, while Maureen stayed in Nottingham.
In 1964, Maureen followed Doug to Guteslow, Germany on a small RAF passenger plane, where they both lived for 2 years.
When moving back to England they bought a house together in Summerwood Lane, Clifton.
In 1966 Adrian was born. At this time, Doug and Maureen began their Bible Study together with Maureen’s brother Doug and his wife Margaret later joined by Jim Booth. They were both baptised in January of 1968. Maureen was an active member of the congregation alongside Doug, also helping to arrange lots of ‘bring and buy’ sales later on. Where she would often make things to raise money for the Kingdom Hall, such as lavender scented bags and crochet items.
In May of 1969, Shaun was born at Summerwood Lane where the family would live for the next 10 years. In the Spring of 1979 the family moved to Veronica Walk, Barton Green, Clifton where they lived until they passed.
She was a housewife for many years but always kept herself busy and always on the go. Maureen was a keen knitter, crocheter, seamstress and baker and would be often creating something new to try or give away.
In 1987, Lindsay was born to Doug and Maureen as a wonderful surprise.
Maureen spent most of the next few years taking care of Lindsay and voluntarily chose to keep her at home even when she could have started school for the first year!
Maureen became an integral part of the Whitegate school support group accompanying them on all the school trips and swimming lessons each week.
Her love of plants continued as she was older, always planting and spending time in the garden. Wherever she would go, she would be seen taking cuttings of plants and cultivating them at home. Her favourite was the lilac hydrangea plants in Cornwall and would take a new cutting each year she went to visit.
Maureen developed breast cancer in 2005 where she underwent treatment including a mastectomy. Her strong-willed nature made her battle on whilst many didn’t see how tough it was on her. She suffered again in 2011 enduring a painful fall resulting in an immediate hip replacement.
Maureen would often write poems and letters about her life so they could be passed down to her children, often writing pages to be collected to make a book about her life.
Both Maureen and Doug were diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2015 and together they embarked on the journey together as they did in most areas of their lives. Maureen again took this challenge on the chin and vowed to keep battling on as normal for as long as she could.
Maureen was very stubborn and did not give in until the very end. Her legacy for being a fighter will forever live on. She will be sadly missed by all of her family and friends.
Rest in peace Mum, we miss you very much! Xxx
