Bob Spencer (19 Aug 1934 - 11 Jul 2024)

In loving memory of Bob Spencer who sadly passed away on 11th July 2024 aged 89.

Christopher Robert Bladen Spencer/Bob/Bud/grandad/ great grandad and dad was born in Rochester in 1934.

As a child, Bob was briefly evacuated during World War II, but returned to Rochester where he and his family lived for the rest of the war.

When he was 15 Bob left home to go to Merchant Navy College. He went on his first voyages when he was only 16, starting a career in the merchant navy that would take him all over the world.

Bob left the sea in 1960 when he met and married Alice- they were married for 64 years.

Bob then embarked on a career working on the safety side of aircraft engines working in Rochester until 1976. Bob and Alice then went into business and moved to Sittingbourne where they remained for the rest of their lives.

By the late 1970's the sea was calling Bob. He went to work as second officer on cross channel ferries sailing from Dover. He was no longer 'deep sea' but had many a tale to tell of his voyages to Zeebrugge, Boulogne and Calais.

Bob retired in the early 1990's and continued to enjoy going regularly to the seaside with the family and his grand children.

Bob was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2015 and had a long illness in which he was continually supported by Alice. Bob rarely ventured far away from home during this time but longed to revisit Rochester and Sligo - his two favourite places.

Bob's funeral service will be focused on remembering a life well lived, Bob's interests and above all his humour and love for his family and friends.

The service will be on Friday 9th August at 2.00. It will take place at the Garden of England Crematorium, Sheppey Way, Sittingbourne, ME9 8GZ.

Afterwards everyone is warmly invited to join us at 3 Blandford Gardens Sittingbourne, Kent, ME10 4HW to remember and celebrate Bob's life.
