In loving memory of Robert Barker who sadly passed away on 27th June 2024

David Sissons wrote

Very shocked and sorry to hear of Robert's passing. I heard at the Annual Dinner of the Rotherham Grammar School Old Boys' Association on Friday 18th October. Robert attended in October 2023, and he was seated next to me.I first met him in January 1953 at Broom Valley Infants' School in Rotherham, and we went through the 'A' stream at Broom Valley School and Rotherham Grammar school, adding the Sixth Form in Science at the latter, which I left in 1964,and I think he left in 1965 or 1966 before going to Cambridge. There was then a long period of absence until I started attending the RGSOBA Dinners in 2011, though I nearly called on him in Brassington, Derbyshire previous to that when my Peak District rambles took me that way. I am hoping to write a tribute and memory for the RGSOBA's Newsletter, due out in December/January. Robert was a major influence on my life.

  • Hello David, Lovely to hear from you. I'm sorry you didn't hear sooner I did try to get in touch with as many old boys that I knew of but Rob had so many friends. He was a major influence on my life too, we were married for 45 years and in all that time he remained my very best friend. He had triumphed over so many very serious illnesses but, sadly, not this one. I miss him more than I can say but, at last, he's not in any more pain. If I can help in any way do please get in touch. Best wishes, Sue

  • Hello Sue and very sorry to hear of your loss. I would like to get in touch about what were for me the missing 45 years or so between late 1965 and early 2011. I understand Robert worked for Rolls-Royce, based in Derby. I used to visit Brassington frequently, usually because of a reference to a lead-mining family mentioned by Daniel Defoe in his 'Tour of the Island of Britain' - they apparently lived in a hole in the ground near what's now the High Peak Trail. I sent my e-mail address to this site, but if it hasn't been passed on I can send it again. Thanks, David Sissons
