Evan and I were both born in Senghenydd. We lived across the valley from each other. Close as we were we were worlds apart. I didn't know him until he married my sister Gwladys. I was 8 years younger than him so in many ways, I looked up to him. Especially, I admired his forthrightness. He would always tell you the blunt truth. There was no pandering. Since I went on to have a career in the arts, this was a welcome contrast to the flattery I experienced there.

When Evan and Gwladys moved to Tickhill, I visited them ,especially for magical Christmases. And when I decided to get married I chose to do so in Tickhill. After that, whenever I visited with my family, our conversations were full of debates about Welsh rugby and politics. Being a staunch Labour supporter all his life,it is sad that he died not knowing of the Labour
landslide. Our phone conversations would have been full of it.

I live in the USA now, and so I hadn't seen him since 2013. But I shall miss him. He represented a sort of anchor for me to the place where both of us grew up.

  • Dear Gareth It’s lovely to see this post here. I’ve spent a lot of time with Uncle Evan over the years and he spoke about you often , your girls and your work which he was very proud of. Of course still has some of your work in pride of place. I’ve never met you but I know you were a very special person to him. Siân xx ( niece, Donald’s daughter)
