In loving memory of Sheila Leeds who sadly passed away on 25 June 2024 after a short illness.

Sheila was the fifth of seven children of Mary and Frederick (Fred) Wilton, having been born 30 minutes after her identical twin sister Edna, on 09 July 1943.

They grew up in Edwinstowe in Nottinghamshire and as the family expanded, they lived in several different houses on what was then a colliery housing estate, as Fred was a coal miner.

After leaving school, Edna and Sheila trained together as nurses, first as Nursing Cadets and then as Student Nurses. They qualified as State Registered Nurses in 1965.

Later on in the 1960's as Edna married and settled down with her husband Malcolm, Sheila returned to training as a Pupil Midwife. She qualified as a State Registered Midwife in 1968, shortly after the birth of Edna's first child.

Sheila practised clinically as a midwife for most of her career, working at a number of hospitals in Nottinghamshire, Somerset and West Yorkshire, delivering hundreds of babies. Over the years, Sheila undertook additional training in first line and middle management and climbed the ranks to the role of Associate Director of Midwifery Services in Bradford.

Sheila lived for many years in nurses' homes whilst working shifts, and then with Edna, Malcolm and their two daughters Alison and Helen whenever she had a few days off together. Sheila shared a bedroom with Alison and Helen, and she spent every summer holiday and Christmas with them, so it really was like they grew up with two mums.

After many years of living in nurses' homes, Sheila bought a little bungalow for herself in Eccleshill in Bradford, and the girls often visited her there with their boyfriends.

Over the years, Sheila had plenty of suitors, but she didn't settle down until she met John Leeds, a Film Editor in a local pub in Bradford. They were married in 1992 and moved to their beloved house in Dunham-on-Trent in 1998.

Sheila and John spent many happy years together and particularly enjoyed travelling and eating out. They took two round-the-world trips, to a variety of countries, including visits to John's daughter Constance and her family in Australia. Sheila often said that of all the countries she visited, Bali was her favourite.

John sadly passed away in 2016 and Sheila continued to live in the house she loved with her little dog Freddie. She spent a lot of time with her close friend Sue, and Sheila really valued Sue's friendship in her final years.

Sheila is greatly missed by her family and friends.

Respecfully, the family ask that instead of flowers anyone wanting to make a tribute can donate to Cancer Research UK via the link provided.

Sheila was always, loving, kind and generous to all our family and she loved having news and photos of her great nephews and nieces and their artwork was always appreciated. She never failed to make laugh even when describing things that had gone wrong.
She loved my brother and made him very happy.
I will miss her.

I first met Sheila in 1990 when she and Dad got together. We hit it off straight away, and I
knew we would get on like a house on fire.
Sheila and Dad married in 1992 and I feel confident in saying that Dad was the love of her
life, and she was the love of his. Sheila would always award and deduct ‘Brownie Points’ for
jobs well done, and minor transgressions!
They made each other extremely happy and enjoyed doing the same things - pottering in the
garden, camping, making new friends and catching up with old friends in their local boozer.
Even when they visited us in Australia on several occasions, they quickly found their local
pub and made several new friends.
Sheila was a wonderful grandmother to Jack and Ben. As little children, they adored bath
time with her and she had them laughing as she found potatoes growing in their mucky ears.
Sheila always saved £1 a week for them each as pocket money, and each year she would
send £52 to them at Christmas time.
She was a fabulous and very entertaining story-teller and even when telling a tale of things
going catastrophically wrong, she would have us laughing. She usually started or ended her
tales with “I couldn’t believe it!”
She bought their beloved Shih Tzu dog Freddy for Dad and he was a wonderful companion
for them both. Freddy was treated like a prince and I’m pretty sure he quickly replaced Dad
as ‘top male’ in the household.
As Dad’s health declined, Sheila stepped into her carer role and took excellent care of him
for as long as she was able. After his death she missed him dreadfully and we always
reminisced about Dad during our regular phone calls.
Sheila was a wonderful step-mother to me, never trying to mother me but always being a
good friend. She will be forever in our hearts.

Sheila and my brother John got together at about the same time as my wife Trish and me. As soon as we all realised we got together for a Sunday Lunch so everybody could meet each other and the boys could congratulate themselves on their respective luck. Right from the start we knew just how wonderful and kind Sheila was and just how much she loved John. John loved Sheila with everything he had and I have never seen two people so happy all the time. They were just right for each other and now they will be again.
God Bless you Sheila for your love, warmth and kindness and for being such a terrific sister in law.

All our love Simon and Trish xxxx
